action
Crusher McKay is an engineer on board the SS Arcturus passenger liner . Despite his toughness, his team stands behind him. The doctor Dr. Tony Caig, who travels from Shanghai to San Francisco to be close to his former girlfriend, the nurse Ann Grayson. McKay also feels drawn to Ann, and a rivalry develops between the engineer and the doctor.
A Chinese man is discovered as a stowaway in the middle of the Pacific. The man is infected with cholera bacteria and infects bystanders. An epidemic threatens to break out on board the steamer, causing panic among passengers. McKay orders the lower decks where the Chinese was discovered to be sealed. The order is opposed by Dr. Craig, who wants to treat the infected. McKay meanwhile has to urge his men to keep steaming the boilers.
The passengers on the upper decks have not noticed any of the problems so far. Only when a crew member falls ill do they panic too. Dr. Craig and Ann are desperate to heal the sick. In doing so, they come closer again. As more and more of his men fall ill, McKay grabs a shovel himself to shovel coal into the kettles. But McKay also falls victim to the infection. Without the guidance of their engineer, the frightened stokers revolt. Craig's attempts to contain the mutiny fail. Only when McKay gets up from his bed, terminally ill, do the men go back to their work. Thanks to McKay's dogged determination, the Arcturus reached port safely.
