Robert Russell Bennett

Robert Bennett (born June 15, 1894 in Kansas City , Missouri , † August 18, 1981 in New York City ) was an American composer.

Life

Robert Russell Bennett received his training from Carl Busch from 1908 . On trips to Europe he took lessons from Nadia Boulanger . In 1928 he received a Guggenheim grant . From 1930 he worked for the Hollywood film studios and from 1941 as Kapellmeister of various radio and television orchestras. In 1957 and 2008 he received a special Tony Award for his services to the Broadway musical. For the music to Oklahoma! he was awarded an Oscar in 1956 . He had previously received a nomination in 1939.

He composed six operas and one operetta , symphonies, film music, a guitar concerto and a concerto for violin, piano and orchestra, chamber music works, an organ sonata and choral works.
