Su Tong

Su Tong ( Chinese  蘇童  /  苏童 , Pinyin Sū Tóng ; born January 23, 1963 in Suzhou , Jiangsu Province , pseudonym of 童忠貴  /  童忠贵 , Tóng Zhōngguì ), is a Chinese author. With his short story Rote Laterne , which was published in 1990 and filmed in 1991, he became internationally known.

Life

His parents, father was a civil servant and mother worked in a cement factory, named their son Tong Zhonggui. His later chosen writer name Su Tong means "child from Suzhou".

He studied Chinese literature at the Beijing Pedagogical University and graduated in 1984 with a bachelor's degree. From 1986 to 1992 he was editor of the literary magazine Zhongshan. In 1987 his short story Memories of Mulberry Garden was published. In 1990 the story A Horde of Women and Concubines was published , which was filmed by director Zhang Yimou with the title Red Lantern . In 1993, Su went abroad for the first time. He took part in an event organized by the Goethe Institute on Chinese authors.
