The film shows rhinos, alligators, pigeons and bears who make humorous comments and jokes, but also songs. Among other things, a family of bears can be seen singing the song Darktown Strutter's Ball .

And Their Families was made as part of the popular Speaking of Animals short film series . Recordings of animals were provided with separately filmed mouths by rotoscopy and thus made to "speak". The film was released on June 4, 1942. Other parts of the Speaking-of-Animals series, which ran until 1949, were for example the Oscar-nominated short film Down on the Farm and the Oscar-winning short film Who's Who in Animal Land .
