These so-called "snowbirds" increase the population by around 31,000 each winter. In recent years, however, year-round residents from the coastal and metropolitan regions of California have increasingly moved to Palm Desert, attracted by the low prices for high-quality apartments.

history
Today's Palm Desert was originally known as Old MacDonald Ranch before it was renamed Palm Village in the 1920s ; The reason for the name change was the cultivation of date palms . Local historians believe that most of the residents prior to 1950 were Cahuilla Indians from the now extinct San Cayetano tribe who worked on farms.
The settlement saw its first major development when a United States Army camp was established nearby in 1943 . An upscale shopping area called "El Paseo" was created here, which is similar to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills . In 1948 the Palm Desert Corporation began building real estate, and in 1951 the city was given its current name.
With only 1500 permanent residents at the time, Palm Desert was declared an independent city on November 26, 1973 . After that, Palm Desert was enlarged as a planned city in the desert with the aim of extending from Palm Springs to Indio .
Many celebrities own homes in Palm Desert, including Rita Rudner , Ralph Waite , Michelle Wie, and Bill Gates . The film producers Jerry Weintraub and Robert Velo also call Palm Desert their second home.
Since 1996 there has been an information center of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument in the city.
