The urban area has a size of 245,984 square kilometers. The city can be reached via Interstate 10 or California State Route 111 ; it is about 180 kilometers from Los Angeles .
Near Palm Springs is the world's longest one-piece cable car, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up Mount San Jacinto . The West Coast Spring Break also takes place here every year , mainly on North Palm Canyon Drive (Highway 111) and Indian Avenue as well as in the adjacent hotels and motels .
The Palm Springs High School football team is made up of Indians.
history
The indigenous people of Palm Springs belonged to the Agua Caliente tribe of the Cahuilla Indians. From a European point of view, the city was "discovered" by the Spaniards around 1774, who found the hot springs. The Spaniards called the place " la palma de la mano de Dios " (German: "The palm of God"). The Indians own a reserve of approx. 125 square kilometers, which takes up about a fifth of the city area. Since the 1960s, Palm Springs has had a reputation for being a haven for American high society . Big stars like Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra built or bought houses in Palm Springs during this time. This fact earned the city the reputation as a place where the stars relax.
Today, Palm Springs is a popular winter spot for seniors (jokingly called "Snowbirds" because they spend the summer in their homes in the northern US).

Demographics
The United States Census 2000 counted 42,807 residents in 20,516 households and 9,457 families in Palm Springs. The population density was 175.4 inhabitants / km². The number of residential units was 30,823, which corresponds to a density of 126.3 apartments / km².
The population in 2000 consisted of 78.33 percent white, 3.93 percent African American, 0.94 percent indigenous, 3.83 percent Asian, 0.14 percent Pacific islanders, 9.78 percent came from other races and 3, 06 percent from two or more races. 23.72 percent of the population said they were Hispanic in the census .
Children under the age of 18 lived in 16.3 percent of households and married couples lived together in 34.0 percent of households. 8.5 percent of households had a female head of household without a husband present and 53.9 percent of households were non-families. 41.6 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 18.3 percent had someone age 65 or older who lived alone. The average household size was 2.05 people and the average family consisted of 2.88 people.
17.0 percent of the population were less than 18 years old, 6.1 percent were in the 18 to 24 age group, 24.2 percent were between 25 and 44 years old and 26.4 percent were between 45 and 64 years old. 26.2 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 women there were 107.8 men; For every 100 women over 18, there were 107.4 men.

The per capita income was US $ 25,957. About 11.2 percent of families and 15.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line ; this affected 28.2 percent of those under 18 years of age and 6.8 percent of those aged 65 or over. The fact that the income appears relatively low in the statistics is primarily due to the fact that Palm Springs has a very high proportion of (quite wealthy) retirees and people with second homes whose income is not taken into account.
