Moreno Valley borders Riverside to the west, Los Angeles Counties and Orange Counties are further away .

The city is connected to the long-distance network of the USA via Interstate 215 and California State Route 60 , also known locally as the Moreno Valley Freeway . Nearby airports include Los Angeles International Airport , John Wayne Airport , Los Angeles-Ontario Airport and San Bernardino International Airport .

One geographic location visible from almost anywhere in the city is Box Springs Mountain . This mountain in the northwest of the city towers over the Moreno Valley and has thus become a landmark. There is a capital "M" on the city side. It was privately built on the advice of the city administration to promote unity. The letter is on public land and is maintained by volunteers. Lights have been attached to it since December 3, 2005, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the founding of the city and the removal of severe damage to the "M" caused by heavy rain the year before. Then-Mayor Bonnie Flickinger said residents liked the lighting and therefore planned to illuminate the letter regularly. Between December 2nd and 6th, 2009, the "M" was lit up again, this time to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Various projects by the Eagle Scouts , the highest tier of Boy Scouts of America , were launched to preserve the letter.

history

The first residents

Originally what is now the Moreno Valley was inhabited by Indians, a group descended from the Shoshone . These first settlers marked the land wherever there was water, for example at rivers or springs. They developed a rural culture that ate mainly on a porridge made from acorns , but also on game and edible insects . Primitive rock paintings and stone bowls that were used to grind acorns have been found around Moreno Valley .

American settlement

In 1850, about 100 years later, California became a state in its own right and the Americans settled the country. John Butterfield's Overland Mail Company's route from Tucson to San Francisco ran through what is now the Moreno Valley. Farmers began to inhabit the land.

In 1883, Frank E. Brown formed the Bear Valley Land and Water Company, which supplied water to farmers from Bear Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains . The city is still named after him, because moreno is the Spanish word for brown or brown . The establishment of the Perris and Alessandro Irrigation District meant that the demand for Bear Valley water continued to grow. Therefore, there was a lawsuit with the city of Redlands , which had the privileges on the water. Redlands won the litigation in 1899. This was followed by a period of drought that forced most of the Moreno Valley residents to relocate.

March Air Force Base

Moreno Valley's revitalization began in 1918 when the United States Army Air Service (now the United States Air Force ) built March Field on the outskirts of Riverside as a result of post- World War I expansion . Originally fighter pilots were trained here . The facility was closed as early as 1922, but reopened as an Air Force Base in 1927 . As a result, the towns of Sunnymead, Moreno and Edgemont began to grow. During World War II , March Field was again converted into a training ground for fighter pilots. In the more than 70 years of the March Air Force Base's existence, the facility housed 85,000 troops at times.

Since April 1, 1996, the site has belonged to the Air Force Reserve Command , so March Air Force Base (MAFB) became March Joint Air Reserve Base (MJARB).

Riverside International Raceway

From 1957 to 1989, the Riverside International Raceway was located on the site of today's Moreno Valley Mall . Here, among other competitions, a Formula 1 race was held in 1960 , which Stirling Moss won.

Elevation to the city

In the 1980s, Moreno Valley experienced an enormous population increase: in 1970 the population was still 18,871, in 1984 it was 49,702. The rapid development of the economy in California also resulted in the construction of many new homes and businesses. This growth led to the desire to make Moreno Valley independent as a city. Although efforts in 1968 and 1983 were unsuccessful, voters voted in 1984. The parishes of Edgemont, Sunnymead and Moreno were amalgamated on December 3, 1984 as the Moreno Valley to a common town. In the same year the first city council was elected. The seal and the city motto People, Pride, Progress were adopted the following year.

Further development

From 1990 to 1992 Moreno Valley's population exploded again, making the city the second largest city in Riverside County with a population of 118,000 at the time . As the decade progressed, the previously robust economy in Moreno Valley and across California deteriorated. Many people left the city. In addition, March Air Force Base was downgraded in 1996 and has since been operated as March Joint Air Reserve Base by Air Force Reserve Command . Towards the end of the decade, however, the economy began to recover, and many companies, such as Lowe's, set up operations in the Moreno Valley or nearby locations. In the early 21st century, many new companies came to Riverside County. In addition, the cost of living in Los Angeles County and Orange Counties rose , making the less developed, southern half of the Inland Empire an attractive location for industry. The positive economic development in recent years can be seen in particular at the "Moreno Valley Mall" shopping center.

In 2006, a 21,600 m² store of the Walmart chain opened on the east end of the city, near the Moreno Valley Auto Mall. This is also the first SuperTarget location in California since July 2007 . In addition, a branch of the Best Buy chain has been located here since October 2007 , but it was closed again a few months later. In addition, the Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Course, once one of the 75 best golf courses in the USA according to Golf Magazine, testifies to the boom in the city.

DHL controversy

In October 2005, the German company DHL began using the March Air Reserve Base as a center for work in Southern California . Although contracts stipulated that initially only 250 workers were allowed to be employed, on average working days it was over 300. Residents then went to court without success.

In November 2008 DHL announced its withdrawal from the USA due to severe financial losses. In January 2009 DHL also gave up its location at the March Air Reserve Base.

Current development

Today Moreno Valley is inhabited by almost 200,000 people and experienced another development boom after the recession at the end of the last decade. Metrolink is now driving to Moreno Valley and the construction of a four-lane highway from Interstate 215 to Interstate 15 in Corona is being discussed. New houses for the upper middle class have been built in the east of the city, as well as office buildings and commercial areas. The proportion of Latinos in the total population has grown rapidly to over 50%; African Americans make up 18%.

administration

Moreno Valley is administered by a Government Council Manager . The city is divided into five districts, each of which has its own MP. This council appoints two members of the mayor and his representative from among its members.

  • District 1: Jesse Molina
  • District 2: Richard Steward
  • District 3: Tom Owings
  • District 4: Marcelo Co
  • District 5: Victoria Baca

The current mayor is Tom Owings and his deputy is Marcelo Co. The non-town councilor is Henry Garcia.

Moreno Valley is part of the 37th District in the California Senate , currently represented by Republican Mimi Walters, and the 63rd, 64th, and 65th Districts of the California State Assembly , represented by Democrat Anthony Rendon, Isadore Hall, III . and Sharon Quirk-Silva. Moreno Valley also belongs to California's 45th Congressional constituency , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 7 and is represented by Republican John BT Campbell .
