history

From 1905 the cultivation of oranges and other agricultural products began in what is now Romoland. There was a dispute with Hemet , as both places wanted a lucrative part of the Southern Pacific Railroad network in their area. The dispute was settled with a boxing match ; this was won by the mayor of Hemet, Dan Beecham, on May 14, 1906 against Ronald Arcia, the mayor of Romoland. So the line was moved in Hemet.

The Romoland parish was planned by the Santa Fe Railroad in the 1890s . The railway line was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Many workers were recruited from Mexico for this purpose , which is why they became the dominant ethnic group : The censuses of 1930 and 1940 showed that Romoland had one of the highest proportions of Mexican residents in all of southern California . The Mexicans began developing their own Spanish-speaking community; they built shops, schools, recreation areas, and churches.

Legend has it that all of today's Romoland residents are of Mexican descent, but the truth is that only 40% of them are Mexicans and / or Latinos . Some of them come from Central America or other Latin American areas than Mexico.

From the 1920s, the first blood oranges in the USA were planted in Romoland . The company Romoland Fruit Co. started in 1936 so that blood oranges as citrus tomatoes to market because the word blood would have deterred buyers in their eyes. Nevertheless, there was little response from the population, and from 1937 the fruit was sold as blood oranges . Agriculture played a major role in the life of the community, so that Romoland developed into a rural town in the Inland Empire .

During the Second World War , sandbags were produced in Romoland for fastening purposes. In 1945 the politician Adolf Augustus Berle called Romoland the "sandbag capital of the USA".

On October 1, 2008, large parts of the community were incorporated into the newly established city of Menifee .

There are several horse ranches in Romoland. In 2008 the Anheuser-Busch InBev brewery group closed their ranch on site. Most of the Budweiser Clydesdales were housed here, a breed of horses often featured in the brewery's advertisements. Since then, the horses have lived at Warm Springs Ranch near Boonville , Missouri .
