Mecca is a census-designated place in Riverside County in the US state of California , United States . The place has 8,577 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is located in the east of the Coachella Valley .

Mecca is located in the southern, central part of Riverside County in the US state of California . The village belongs to the Coachella Valley and does not border directly on other places, but there are Thermal , Oasis and Coachella nearby . Towards the southeast, the Salton Sea follows shortly after the municipal boundaries .
To the west, California State Route 111 runs through Mecca in a north-south direction .
The place has 8,577 inhabitants (as of the 2010 census ). Mecca covers an area of 18,023 km², which consists entirely of land; the population density is thus 475.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The center of the village is at an altitude of −57 meters and is therefore - like the whole of the east of the Coachella Valley - below sea level .
