history
As early as 1853, what is now Indian Wells was, according to WP Blade, a geologist with the Smithsonian Institution , the location of a thriving Indian village. After discovering gold on the Colorado River , William D. Bradshaw had a path built from Los Angeles to the gold mines just ten years later . The Alexander and Company Stage Line used this route to haul prospectors, and Indian Wells became an important stop on the route. In 1875 the route was abandoned due to excessive competition from the Southern Pacific Railroad , but was revived by Wells Fargo a year later .
In the decades that followed, settlers gradually reached the land and ranches became profitable. In the 1950s the first golf courses were opened at the "Eldorado Country Club" and "Indian Wells Country Club". With Desi Arnaz ' "Indian Wells Hotel" the forerunner of the later opened "Indian Wells Resort Hotel" in the 1957th In 1960, professional golfer Arnold Palmer won the first ever Bob Hope Desert Classic golf tournament . US President Dwight D. Eisenhower was a regular visitor to Indian Wells and later also owned a house in the Eldorado district.
On July 27, 1967, an election was called to prevent Indian Wells from being incorporated into any of the neighboring cities such as Palm Desert . When voting, the population decided that Indian Wells should be named a city of its own. On July 14, 1967, this resolution took effect and Indian Wells became California's four hundredth city and the sixteenth in Riverside County . Pete Peterson was elected first mayor. Since then, Indian Wells has continued to grow, adding resorts , golf courses, and luxury residential areas.
