The American Independent Party (AIP, German American Independent Party ) is a right-wing paleoconservative party in the United States . It was founded in 1967 by Bill and Eileen Shearer. The party gained notoriety when it nominated the racist Governor of Alabama , George Wallace , as a presidential candidate in the 1968 presidential election. In 1976 the party split into the modern American Independent Party and the American Party . Between 1992 and 2008, the party was also the California branch of the Constitution Party until it broke up with this party in 2008.
Early history
In 1968, the American Independent Party nominee George Wallace as a presidential candidate and retired Air Force General of the Air Force , Curtis LeMay , as candidate for the vice presidency. Wallace did not represent the party in all states. In Connecticut he went to the "George Wallace Party". The Wallace / LeMay duo achieved 13.5% of the population's vote and 46 electoral votes .
In 1969, representatives from 40 countries named the American Party the successor to the American Independent Party. In some states, such as Connecticut, the American Party was officially registered as the American Conservative Party. The modern American Conservative Party has nothing in common with the Wallace-era party. The official flag was adopted in 1970. It includes an eagle with a few arrows in its talons. In 1972 Congressman John G. Schmitz and author Thomas J. Anderson from Tennessee (Vice) were nominated as a duo for the presidential election.
After the split in 1976
In 1976 the party split into the somewhat more moderate American Party, which included more conservatives from the Northern States and supporters of Schmitz ', and the American Independent Party, which focused on the Deep South . Both parties subsequently nominated various presidential candidates.
In the 1980s, Bill Shearer led the American Independent Party into the Populist Party . The American Independent Party has been a California branch of the Constitution Party , formerly known as the US Taxpayers Party , since 1992 . In 2008 the AIP split off from the Constitution Party.
Dispute over the chairmanship in 2008
In 2008, ahead of the presidential election, there was a spin-off that resulted in Jim King and Ed Noonan being elected chairmen.
Noonan's group spoke out in favor of leaving the party and joining America's Party . King's group later called themselves the Constitution Party of California.
