John G. Schmitz
John George Schmitz (born August 12, 1930 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , † January 10, 2001 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1970 and 1973 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Schmitz studied at Marquette University until 1952 . Between 1952 and 1960 he was a jet pilot in the Marine Corps . Until 1983 he was a member of the reserve for this branch of service. After serving in the military, he continued his education at California State College in Long Beach . In the following years he taught philosophy and political science at Santa Ana College . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1964 and 1970 he was a member of the California Senate . He was considered very conservative and became a member of the John Birch Society .
After the death of MP James B. Utt , Schmitz was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he took up his new mandate on June 30, 1970, when the by-election was due for the 35th seat of California. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1973 . In 1972, he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party, which had to do with a dispute with President Richard Nixon , who supported his opponent.
Out of annoyance over his failure to be nominated for re-election to Congress, Schmitz ran in 1972 as a candidate for the right-wing American Independent Party for the presidency; his running mate was Thomas J. Anderson from Tennessee . Of course, he had no chance of asserting himself against the candidates of the established parties. Nixon was re-elected in the presidential election; Schmitz took third place with 1.1 million votes, which meant a share of 1.4 percent. In 1976 he sought his return to Congress without success. Between 1978 and 1982 he was once again a member of the California Senate.
In 1982 an extramarital relationship was discovered by Schmitz, which cost him his further political career. He died on January 10, 2001 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia . His son Joseph became inspector general of the US Department of Defense that same year and later a senior manager of the Blackwater security company .
