Kenneth Stanton "Ken" Calvert (born June 8, 1953 in Corona , California ) is an American politician . Since 1993 he has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ken Calvert attended Corona High School until 1971 . In 1973 he graduated from Chaffey College at Rancho Cucamonga . He then studied until 1975 at San Diego State University . For the next five years he was the manager of a family restaurant; then he founded his own real estate company. He also began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Right after high school, he worked for Congressman Victor Veysey in 1972 . In 1982 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the congressional elections. Between 1984 and 1988 he was Republican party chairman in Riverside County .

In the 1992 congressional election , Calvert was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 43rd constituency of California , where he succeeded Ron Packard on January 3, 1993 . After twelve re-elections so far, he can still exercise his mandate in Congress today. There he is or was a member of the Approval Committee and the Budget Committee as well as three sub-committees. He is also a member of the International Conservation Caucus . Internal restructuring in California changed the electoral districts that Calvert represented in Congress several times. Until 2003 he represented the 43rd constituency, then he moved to the 44th constituency, which he represented in the House of Representatives until 2013. Since then he has been a member of parliament for the 42nd electoral district. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Calvert has faced allegations of corruption while serving in Congress. The ethics organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) named Calvert one of the 15 most corrupt congressmen. However, no charges have yet been made. Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
