Rohit "Ro" Khanna (born September 13, 1976 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ro Khanna's ancestors come from India . His grandfather Amarnath Vidyalankar was a supporter of the Indian independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and a member of the Lok Sabha . Khanna's parents immigrated to the United States. Until 1998 he studied economics at the University of Chicago . After completing a law degree at Yale University and being admitted to the bar in 2001, he began working in this profession. He later also became a law professor at Santa Clara Law School . He also occasionally gives guest lectures on economics at Stanford University . Since 2015 he has been Vice President of Smart Utility Systems . Today he lives in Fremont .

Politically, Khanna joined the Democratic Party . In 2004 and 2014 he ran unsuccessfully for the congress . Between 2009 and 2011 he was Deputy Assistant Secretary in the United States Department of Commerce . In the 2016 congressional election , Khanna was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 17th  electoral district of California in Washington, DC , where on January 3, 2017, he succeeded his party colleague Mike Honda , whom he defeated in the election.
