Joseph C. McKibbin

Joseph Chambers McKibbin (born May 14, 1824 in Chambersburg , Franklin County , Pennsylvania , †  July 1, 1896 in Charles County , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph McKibbin attended the public schools in his home country and then between 1840 and 1842 Princeton College . In 1849 he moved to Sierra County , California. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1852, he began to work in Downieville in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1852 and 1853 he was a member of the California Senate .

In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1856 McKibbin was elected for the first seat of California in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded James William Denver on March 4, 1857 . Since he was not confirmed in 1858, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

McKibbin served as a staff officer in the Union Army during the Civil War . He rose to the rank of colonel. After the war he settled in the federal capital Washington, where he worked as an entrepreneur. In 1883 he bought the Marshall Hall property in Maryland near Washington. Joseph McKibbin died there on July 1, 1896. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
