Karen Lorraine Jacqueline "Jackie" Speier (born May 14, 1950 in San Francisco , California ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2008 .

Life and career

Jackie Speier is the daughter of a German father, Manfred Speier, who immigrated to the United States after World War II, and an Armenian mother, Nancy Kanchelian, who taught her the importance of recognizing the Armenian genocide .

Speier attended Mercy High School in Burlingame until 1968 . She then studied at the University of California at Davis until 1972 . After completing a law degree at the University of California's Hastings Law School and being admitted to the bar, she began working in this profession. At the same time she embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1978 she was on the staff of Congressman Leo J. Ryan . In 1978 she accompanied him to Jonestown , Guyana, where Ryan was supposed to investigate allegations against the Peoples Temple sect . Speier was shot several times in an attack by cult members that killed Ryan and four others.

Back in the United States, Speier ran for Ryan's seat in Congress in 1979 , but remained unsuccessful. Between 1980 and 1986 she was a district administrator in San Mateo County ; from 1986 to 1998 she was a member of the California State Assembly . She was then a member of the State Senate from 1998 to 2006 . In 2006 Speier ran unsuccessfully for the office of Lieutenant Governor of California.

After the death of Congressman Tom Lantos , Jackie Speier was elected in the by-election for the twelfth seat of California as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she took up her new mandate on April 8, 2008. After five re-elections so far, she can still exercise her mandate in Congress today. Her new legislative term runs until January 2021. Since 2013 she has represented the fourteenth congressional electoral district of her state in the House of Representatives. She is for better control of private gun ownership as well as legal abortion regulations and is committed to environmental protection. Speier was meanwhile a member of the Committee on Homeland Security and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform as well as four sub-committees. She later became a member of the Armed Forces Committee and the Intelligence Committee .
