University of California, Davis

Davis is best known as a student town as the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is located here. The core of the university was founded in 1905 as University Farm and began teaching in 1909 . In 1959, the institution was incorporated into the system of the University of California as the seventh educational institution. The College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies is known for its pioneering role in organic agriculture.

particularities

The city symbol is the penny farthing because Davis is considered a bicycle city . In fact, the city offers a well-developed network of cycle paths, not just by US standards. It was recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and was the first of three municipalities in the USA (next to Boulder and Portland ) to receive the highest level of certification in platinum .

The city is strongly ecologically oriented, offers a regular organic market (Farmers Market), for a long time a supermarket with organically produced food ( Food-Coop ) and one of the oldest eco-festivals in California (Whole Earth Day).
