Chi Cheng (born July 15, 1970 in Davis , California , † April 13, 2013 in Sacramento , California) was an American musician , known as the bassist for the alternative metal band Deftones .

biography

Chi Cheng graduated from California State University in Sacramento in 1989 . During this time, Cheng worked on the university campus , wrote poetry and already played in the band Deftones. In 2000, Cheng published an audio collection of spoken poems called The Bamboo Parachute .

Cheng was seriously injured as a car passenger in a head-on collision between two vehicles on November 4, 2008 and was then in a coma for several months . His sister Mae suffered only minor injuries because, unlike Cheng, she was buckled when her car rolled over three times. Cheng was thrown out of the car.

In February 2009, the Deftones announced that they would perform as planned at the music festival The Bamboozle in California, but with their friend Sergio Vega (formerly a member of the band Quicksand ) as a replacement for Chi Cheng. Since then, Vega has performed regularly with the Deftones and also recorded albums with them, including the 2010 album Diamond Eyes and the subsequent CD Koi No Yokan .

The oneloveforchi.com blog, founded in March 2009, was used to raise funds for medical expenses for Chi Cheng. Fans were initially able to donate towards an initial target of $ 20,000. Two days after he was released from the hospital in June 2012, Cheng was diagnosed with pneumonia , which required further treatment in the intensive care unit. Cheng was released again on July 4th, and then recovered at home.

On April 13, 2013, the bassist died of heart failure on the way to hospital at the age of 42.

Cheng had a son with his first wife. After the divorce of the first marriage, he remarried. Chi Cheng was a practicing Buddhist and showed an interest in Taoism and Shamanism .
