Adrenaline ( English for adrenaline ) is the debut album of from Sacramento originating Deftones . It was released on October 1, 1995 via Maverick Records .

The cover artwork shows a baby slime teat in front of a neutral background.

Emergence

The Deftones have played concerts in their hometown of Sacramento since 1989, and later in other Californian cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles . They also came into contact with Korn , who are considered to be the co-founders of Nu Metal .

In 1993 the Deftones recorded the demo tape (Like) Linus , which mainly contains songs that they have been playing live for some time. The demo recordings also include 7 Words and Root (still under the title Roots ) and two versions of Engine No. 9 , all of which should later be found on Adrenaline .

A live performance in Los Angeles finally aroused the interest of a Maverick record company representative, so that the band was subsequently able to sign a record deal.

The recordings for Adrenaline , which began in July 1995, went off quickly, as they mainly recorded songs that had existed for a long time. Drummer Abe Cunningham said:

“At the time we did the first record - which I really like and think is good - you can tell the band was really young. We'd been playing most of those songs for quite a while, and we were just so happy to be making a record that we didn't really think a whole lot about making the songs better. "

“You can tell from the album - which I really like and which I think is good - that the band was really young when it was recorded. We had played most of these songs for a while and we were just so happy to make an album that we didn't even think about making the songs better. "

- Abe Cunningham

As with the following Deftones albums until 2006, Terry Date was responsible for the production of the album . Ross Robinson , known not least for his work with Korn, produced the hidden track on the album.

Music genre

Adrenaline is often assigned to Nu Metal and, together with the more commercially successful follow-up album Around the Fur, is considered a groundbreaking work for the genre, even if the band later moved away from the genre. Stylistically, the album is characterized by simplicity and roughness, the vocals are alternately clean, screamed and whispered, and rapped passages can also be heard.

As usual for the Deftones, the texts are mostly vague and ambiguous.

reception

Allmusic's Daniel Gioffre described the album as a "promising debut". He praised the precision and the good organization of the attack , "without it sounding mechanical or soulless". The Deftones themselves are "very controlled in the midst of chaos". He also praised the groove that other Nu-Metal bands had lost, as well as the "surprisingly challenging" drumming. The only point of criticism he called the "monotonous singing".

Both Allmusic and Kerrang highlighted the appropriate title for the album.

Music journalist Piero Scaruffi listed Adrenaline at number 33 on his personal list of the best metal albums of all time.

The song Engine No. 9 has been covered several times, including by Korn.

success

Deftones did not reach a chart position with Adrenaline . Through numerous appearances, u. a. as opening act for Ozzy Osbourne , Korn or L7 , the band gained a certain fame and was able to sell over 200,000 copies of their debut album before the successor was released. In 1999 Adrenaline was awarded gold in the United States , followed by platinum in 2008 for 1,000,000 records sold.

In Great Britain, too, Adrenaline was awarded the gold record on July 22, 2013.
