White Pony is the third and most successful album to date by the US metal band Deftones . It was released on June 20, 2000 and is the sequel to Around the Fur .

Music genre

The album is darker and bulkier than its predecessor. The Deftones used different music genres such as industrial , punk and noise . In addition to loud and aggressive tracks, the album also features ballad-like songs like teenagers . There are many tempo changes both between and in the songs. With Passenger there is a duet with the Tool singer Maynard James Keenan on the record. In contrast to its predecessors, White Pony is usually no longer assigned to Nu Metal .

Versions

There are four different versions of White Pony in total . Together with the regular edition, limited editions, each with a red or black cover, booklets and the bonus title The Boy's Republic , were published. In addition, a new edition was published which brought the title Back to School (Mini Maggit) with it, which was a marketing strategy of the label.

" Back to School was a mistake. A calculated song, that had been built up with only one aim in mind: It should be a single. ... Back to School was released because I was an idiot. I wanted to prove something [to the record company]. Months later, after White Pony was released, they wanted us to do a new version of Pink Maggit. They said we lost our heaviness, and there were no more singles on the album. First, I wanted to stick this idea up my ass, but then I thought:, I'm gonna show those fuckers how easy it is to create a hit-single. ' And so I rapped a hip hop part on that song, we shortened it and half an hour later, the hit-single was ready to roll on. "

- Interview with the Deftones

Back to School was a mistake. A calculated piece that was made with one goal in mind: It should be a single ... Back to School came out because I was an idiot. I wanted to prove something to [the record company]. Months later, after White Pony was released, they wanted us to play a new version of Pink Maggit . They said we had lost our gravity and that there were no more singles on the album. At first I wanted to push this idea elsewhere, but ended up thinking, 'I'm going to show those asses how easy it is to write a hit single.' And so I rapped a hip hop part on that song, we cut it and half an hour later the hit single was ready to go out. "

In a later interview, Moreno put his opinion on Back to School (Mini Maggit) into perspective and described it as “not a terrible song” that he “doesn't regret” in retrospect.

Song 7 is originally titled Knife Prty , but is often played as Knife Party .
