Around the Fur is the second studio album by the American music group Deftones . It was released on October 28, 1997 and brought the band through the singles My Own Summer (Shove It) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) the commercial breakthrough.

background

“So we made Around the Fur and we wrote and recorded that record in four months. That was the fastest record we ever did […]. I really feel like we captured the essence of that time in our lives. The songwriting and everything I felt like we could just try whatever and it worked. I'm really proud of that record - I love that record probably more than any of our other records. I mean that's my favorite Deftones record. "

- Chino Moreno :

The album title Around the Fur (Engl. For Around the Fur ) refers, according to singer Chino Moreno on the idea that fur außenrum beautiful, the skin underneath, however, is ugly, what could be understood as a metaphor for superficial people, but also as a reverse Metaphor for his own music, which he basically finds gentle.

Music genre

Compared to the previous album , Around the Fur is a little less raw and punky, but structurally more demanding and more elaborately produced. The loud / quiet dynamic is also characteristic. The lyrics have a personal touch and are often about depression and guilt. The guitar is tuned to Drop D ♭ throughout the album. Terry Date was again responsible for the production .

Around the Fur is considered to be one of the most important Nu Metal albums , although it is sometimes classified as Alternative Metal or Alternative Rock.

The title Headup is a collaboration with Max Cavalera ( Sepultura , Soulfly ).

Cover design

The album cover shows a young woman in a whirlpool from a steep angle. The photo was taken during a nighttime party. According to Moreno, the picture originally also showed Frank Delgado, but they removed him using Photoshop because they were all married at the time. In retrospect, Moreno described the cover as "terrible".

Singles

My Own Summer (Shove It) was released as a single on December 22, 1997, followed by Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) on March 9, 1998 . The singles reached number 29 and 50 respectively on the British single charts . A decisive factor for the resounding success was the airplay on the radio and on music television.

Dean Karr directed the music video for My Own Summer (Shove It) . It features great white sharks and blood soaked water as the band plays on floating shark cages. The music video for Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) , directed by Frank Ockenfels, shows the band under a bridge. In an alternative version for the acoustic version of the song, only Moreno can be seen.

Moreno was dissatisfied with the music video for Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) , as he felt the record company had pressured him to make a video that MTV would enjoy and the result gave the wrong impression of the band. So he intended to record a music video for the song Around the Fur , which would be "just crazy" and would never be shown on television. The video, which includes drug and nude scenes, was shot but never released.

Around the Fur was consistently rated positively. In general, the musical development compared to the debut album , the authenticity and the production were praised.

“Every single instrument holds the bomb, and yet the Terry Date production never runs in half-baked opulence. Every hi-hat hit, every battered string and every hidden sigh from Chino Moreno is present, audible and ultimately makes the overall package a real pleasure for engineer fetishists. [...] Whether with spherical and stirring tones ("Mascara"), with tricky crazyness ("Rickets", "Lotion") or hand in hand with Max Cavalera ("Headup"): The Californian quartet does not close itself off on their second work the emotional world. Rather, those responsible wallow in deep sound cosms that often only become apparent after the second or third run. "

- Excerpt from the review by laut.de.

"The musical discharge [...] is shown here in such grandiose compositions as" My Own Summer (Shove It) ", which is now really familiar to every disco fan, the deeply sad and out of context" Mascara "and the melancholy" Be Quiet " And Drive (Far Away) ". [...] Where others value the image and the show, make-up and the coolest poses possible, the Deftones simply let their emotions come into their own and build things that others only dream of. "
