Sepultura ( Portuguese: 'Grab') is a metal band from Belo Horizonte ( Brazil ) founded in 1984 . On their band name the members met in translating the Motorhead -title Dancing on Your Grave ( English to. Thy grave dancing ').

Foundation and first successes

The only remaining founding member: Xisto Pinto Jr. at Nova Rock 2014

The band was formed in 1984; the original guitarist Wagner Lamounier left the band that same year and then founded Sarcófago . In 1985 the split LP Século XX / Bestial Devastation with the band Overdose was released via Cogumelo Records , at that time Sepultura consisted of Igor and Max Cavalera , Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. and Jairo Guedez. In the following year, the album Morbid Visions was released with the same line-up . Then Jairo Guedez left the band and was replaced by Andreas Kisser; Guedez later founded Eminence .

With the new guitarist came a change in the music, it became more technically demanding. In 1987 the first album in the new line-up, Schizophrenia , was released. This album was first sold in Europe. Two years later, the album Beneath the Remains followed . With this disc Sepultura went on their first international tour. The fourth album, Arise , was released in 1991, produced by Scott Burns at Morrisound Studios in Florida. Chaos AD followed in 1993. With these publications, major successes could be celebrated for the first time. B. for the video for Territory the MTV Video Music Award.

New front man

In 1996 Sepultura released the album Roots . In the same year the band separated from their singer Max Cavalera, which caused a sensation with the fans, as Cavalera was known in the whole metal scene as a charismatic front man. The reason for the separation was a dispute: The contract of the band manager Gloria Cavalera expired. Max, husband of Gloria, did not want to accept that his band colleagues did not want to extend and finally left the band. At first it was said that Gloria interfered too much in the interests of the band and was therefore unpopular. Singer Max Cavalera, however, later named the reason that the wives of his band colleagues had destroyed the band with their pathological jealousy of Gloria and Max. In an interview with Metal Hammer in January 2007, however, he stated that Gloria's son Dana had died during the Roots tour and that Andreas Kisser's wife tried to handle the funeral before his parents returned home. Max Cavalera has not spoken a word to Kisser since then and has been waiting for an apology from Kisser ever since. Max Cavalera then founded the band Soulfly .

Green at the 2007 Metalmania Festival

After considerations to make Andreas the singer of Sepultura were rejected, the American Derrick Leon Green was invited because of his demo tape. He became the band's new vocalist because he fit the band both musically and personally. The first concert with the new singer took place as part of the charity event Barulho contra Fome (in German: 'noise against hunger'). In 1998 the first album with Green was released, Against . After the band said they had played themselves freely with this album, they released Nation , the first jointly written album , in 2001 . In addition to the angry screaming usual for Sepultura, the album also surprised its fans with clear vocals. Another special feature is the guest appearance by Apocalyptica .

In the 2000s

After numerous appearances, including at the Rock in Rio 3 festival in front of 150,000 people, the album Roorback and the EP Revolusongs followed in 2003 , on which Sepultura covered songs by other bands, some of which came from very different musical genres (including Public Enemy , Exodus , U2 , ...). In 2005 the DVD Live was released in Sao Paulo , on which you can find a documentation by Derrick in addition to the concert. The live CD was also released at the same time.

In the same year, the recordings for the album Dante XXI began , which was released on March 17, 2006 and is a setting of Dante Alighieri Divine Comedy . Just in time for the release of the new album, Sepultura went on an extensive European tour with In Flames . Igor Cavalera was represented on the tour by Roy Mayorga , who also played for Soulfly. Igor took some time off given the birth of his fourth child. On June 13, 2006, Igor Cavalera's departure from the band was surprisingly announced; the drummer had strayed too far from the band in his musical visions. Sepultura introduced their new drummer Jean Dolabella on July 21, 2006 at their performance at the Vilar De Mouros Festival in Portugal. In January 2008 a new music video was released for the title Ostia from the album Dante XXI .

In early 2008, the band went to the studio to record their new album, which was released on January 23, 2009. Like Dante XXI, the album is a concept album and essentially revolves around Alex, the main character in the book Uhrwerk Orange and its film adaptation . That is why they decided on the ambiguous album title A-Lex , because the term stands for 'lawless', which also captures the subject. Singer Green was now also a member of the band Musica Diablo .

New label

In July 2010 it was announced that Sepultura had signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast . A new album was announced by the label for 2011 and was released with the title Kairos in June of the same year.

In October 2013 the thirteenth studio album was released, entitled The Mediator Between the Head and Hands Must Be the Heart, and on January 13, 2017, the fourteenth called Machine Messiah . With the latter, they went on tour as the opening act for Kreator in spring 2017. With the following album Quadra , which was released in February 2020, they were able to achieve the highest chart positions in Germany and Switzerland and thus even surpass the success of Roots .

style

Old tape logo which to Schizophrenia was used

On Morbid Visions and Século XX / Bestial Devastation , Sepultura played raw, primitive and aggressive metal, referred to as both death metal and black-metal- influenced thrash metal , which only supporters of releases like Sodom's In the Sign of Evil and Kreators Can address endless pain . After Andreas Kisser joined the company, the thrash metal influences increased significantly. Schizophrenia , Beneath the Remains and Arise can be described as Thrash Metal. From the successor Chaos AD , and especially on the last album with Max Cavalera on vocals, Roots , the thrash metal influences decreased more and more and gave way to hardcore punk , alternative metal and some world music (especially in Reference to the percussion in Igor Cavalera's drumming, the cooperation with the Xavantes tribe [ Itsári on Roots ] or the inclusion of a completely acoustic tribal piece ( Kaiowas on Chaos AD )) influenced the version of their style. After Derrick Green joined the band, the alternative, punk and hardcore influences moved more into the foreground, but the tribal, percussion and world music elements did not suffer either, which can be heard especially on the Against and Nation albums . Since then, in addition to the typical screaming song, the albums also contain passages clearly sung by Derrick Green for the first time. A special feature is the collaboration with the Taiko drum group Kodo in the piece Kamaitachi on the Against album, where ex- Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and Ratos de Porão singer João Gordo can also be heard. Also on the following There are numerous guest musicians on albums. After the pure cover EP Revulsongs from 2002, the elements of the previous albums were mixed more strongly with Thrash Metal and the 2003 album Roorback picked up speed. This development was not only maintained and continued on the follow-up album Dante XXI , but also enriched by the accompaniment of an orchestra with classical music. The album A-Lex from 2009 is a mixture of raw Thrash, Punk and Hardcore, the tribal and world music elements have almost completely disappeared, synthesizers are used for the first time and it can be found in Ludwig Van , a variation of joy nicer Götterfunken , also a classical orchestra again. Groove Metal elements are increasingly finding their way back to Kairos. Sepultura's texts are often directed against the policies of the Brazilian government and call for resistance ( e.g. Refuse / Resist ).
