Chaos AD is the fifth studio album by the Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura . It was released on September 1, 1993 via Roadrunner Records . With this album the band began to incorporate Brazilian rhythms and percussion into their sound, which in the following years became Sepultura's trademark. Chaos AD has been awarded gold records in seven countries, including the US and UK .

Emergence

After Sepultura left their home country for the first time to record an album for the previous album Arise , Chaos AD was recorded in Wales. For the post of producer , the jazz composer John Zorn and Ministry singer Al Jourgensen were initially discussed. The choice finally fell on Andy Wallace, who had already mixed Arise . Sepultura wanted the recordings to be made in an environment that was isolated from the outside world. On Wallace's recommendation, Rockfield Studios near Monmouth in south Wales was booked, where Queen recorded her album Sheer Heart Attack , among others . The instrumental Kaiowas was recorded in the ruins of Chepstow Castle .

“We heard about a South Welsh castle, which is one of the oldest ruins in Europe and of which only the foundation walls remain. We drove there and installed microphones everywhere to record “kaiowas”. Because there was no protective roof, you can also hear the screaming seagulls on the album. "

- Andreas Kisser

During the studio stay, Sepultura recorded several cover versions. Were selected The Hunt of New Model Army , Policia of Titãs , Inhuman Nature of Final Conflict and Crucificados pelo Sistema Ratos de Porão. All cover versions should be used as B-sides . At the suggestion of guitarist Andreas Kisser , only The Hunt was used for the album. In the recording of Slave New World , biohazard singer Evan Seinfeld can be heard for the first time as a guest singer. Chaos AD was mixed by Andy Wallace at The Wool Hall Recording Studios in Bath . The mastering was done by George Marino in the Sterling Sound studio in New York. Music videos were shot for the songs Refuse / Resist , Territory and Slave New World . The filming of the Territory video took place in Israel.

background

With the album title Chaos AD , the band wants to describe the state of the world. According to singer Max Cavalera , the earth has been shaped by violence and terror since the beginning of the era . The first song Refuse / Resist begins with the heartbeat of Max Cavalera's son Zyon, who was still unborn at the time. Territory deals with the Middle East conflict , while Slave New World is a protest song against censorship . Amen deals with the massacre of David Koresh's sect in Waco . In Kaiowas is about the same Indian tribe from the Brazilian rain forest, in protest against an investigation ordered by the government forced resettlement collective suicide committed. The text for Biotech is Godzilla was written by Jello Biafra . Biafra believes AIDS is a product of US genetic engineering and was deliberately designed as a weapon. In his text, politicians who abuse genetic engineering are condemned. Manifesto deals with an uprising in the Carandiru prison in São Paulo in October 1992. The police ended the uprising with a massacre. According to official figures, 111 prisoners were killed, around 80 percent of whom were only in custody. Max Cavalera's voice sounds like that of a news anchor.
