Life and music

Kisser live at the Metalmania -Festival 2007 (Poland)

Kisser was born on August 24, 1968 in São Bernardo do Campo, a municipality in the state of São Paulo. His father, of German descent, worked as a mechanical engineer for Mercedes-Benz and his mother, a native of Slovenia, was a German teacher and hobby artist. Kisser showed an interest in music early on. At the age of ten he started listening to the records of the Beatles, Roberto Carlos and Tonico & Tinoco, which belonged to his parents. He received his first acoustic guitar from his grandmother and later won a second guitar at a bingo game.

Initially, Kisser began learning the basic chords of Brazilian popular music and later classical pieces. Kisser later discovered hard rock through a friend with bands like Queen and Kiss. who had a great influence on him. In 1983 he saw Kiss live in São Paulo. Kisser eventually got an electric guitar, a Giannini Supersonic, and an overdrive pedal. He names guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Howe, Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page and Randy Rhoads as the most important influences.

Esfinge / Pestilence

In 1984 Kisser began playing and singing in the three-part band Esfinge that he had formed with school friends. The band mainly played cover songs by heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Venom. Two years later, the band renamed themselves Pestilence and in 1987 recorded a demo tape called Slaves of Pain. The songs from the demo tape were then reused by Sepultura in their albums Schizophrenia and Beneath The Remains. Pestilence was short-lived, however, and the members ultimately separated.

Sepultura

Kisser at Nova Rock 2014

In 1987 Andreas Kisser met the members of Sepultura and saw a concert of the band while on vacation in Belo Horizonte. On the day of the concert, he improvised as a roadie for the singer and rhythm guitarist, Max Cavalera , and played with the band during the breaks. He eventually replaced lead guitarist Jairo Guedes and played for the first time with Sepultura in Caruaru, Pernambuco. His involvement in the recording of the Schizophrenia album helped develop the band's new sound. Max Cavalera said of him:

"... He brought new ideas and influences into Sepultura. The result was schizophrenia."

On the albums, Schizophrenia and Beneath the Remains , Kisser wrote the lyrics with Max while the whole band wrote the music together. For Arise and afterwards he started writing his own songs. He has also occasionally recorded backing vocals and sung live. In 1996, Kisser temporarily took over the role of Max Cavaleras at the Monsters of Rock festival in Castle Donington because Max had to stay behind to attend the funeral of his stepson, Dana Wells. Today he is next to Paulo Jr. one of the two remaining members of this "classic" formation.

HAIL!

Between 2009 and 2010, Kisser was a member of the tribute band HAIL !, which was founded in late 2008 by Dave Ellefson of Megadeth and music manager Mark Abbattista. In addition to Ellefson and Kisser, a number of other well-known musicians from the metal scene also play at HAIL! such as B. Tim "Ripper" Owens , Paul Bostaph , Mike Portnoy , Jimmy DeGrasso , Phil Demmel, and Roy Mayorga . The original line-up consisted of DeGrasso, Ellefson, Kisser and Owens, with this line-up the band played a series of concerts in Chile in 2009. Then the band went on a European tour and gave a concert in Lebanon. 2010 toured HAIL! in a different line-up (Bostaph, Kisser, Owens and James LoMenzo, who stood in for the late Paul Gray ) back in Europe and also played a few shows in the USA.

De la Tierra

In 2012, Kisser formed the Latin American metal group De La Tierra with Alex González from Maná, Andrés Giménez from ANIMAL and Sr. Flavio from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. In 2013 the band released their first single called "Maldita Historia" and in 2014 their debut album.

Solo album

In 2009 Kisser's double solo album Hubris I & II was released in Europe on Mascot Records . When not working with Sepultura, he experimented with musical ideas, wrote songs and recorded demos, some of which were saved 15 years before the album was released. In 2007 he published some video clips of the recordings on YouTube. It took Kisser six years to complete the project and during that time he took on a large portion of the production costs. In the following months he played a few concerts in Brazil to promote his album and released the video clip for the song "Em Busca do Ouro". In 2010 the album was nominated for the 11th edition of the Latin Grammy Awards in the category "Best Brazilian Rock Album".

Film music

In addition to his main job at Sepultura and other music groups, Kisser was involved in composing a number of Brazilian film soundtracks. In 1998 he starred with Igor Cavalera and Mike Patton on the soundtrack for No Coração dos Deuses , a drama film from 1999. Kisser also starred with Tony Bellotto, Eduardo de Queiroz and Charles Gavin on the music of the award-winning crime drama Bellini ea Esfinge (2002) and the series Bellini eo Demônio (2008).

Side projects

In 1994 Kisser worked on the album Point Blank from Max Cavalera's project Nailbomb and in 1995 the only live appearance of the project. Between 1995 and 1996 he took part in the Sexoturica and Quarteto da Pinga projects together with Jason Newsted (then Metallica), Tom Hunting from Exodus and Robb Flynn from Machine Head . Another project was Godswallop with Newsted, Carl Coletti on drums and Sofia Ramos on vocals. In 2005 Kisser took part in the Roadrunner United project and played at the 25th anniversary concert of the Roadrunner Records record company. He also had guest appearances on albums by bands such as Biohazard (together with Derrick Green), Asesino (founded by Dino Cazares , whose pseudonym was "Asesino" at Brujeria ), Korzus , Krusader, Necromancia and Ratos de Porão . Kisser has also worked as a producer of various bands. In 1992 he co-produced Hammerhead's Shadow of Time to Be album . In 2004 he recorded three songs for the album Treme Terra by the Brazilian rock band Sayowa and co-produced the album Checkmate by Necromancia. In 2006, Kisser co-produced Sayowa's second album with Stanley Soares.

He is a guest musician in Brazilian pop bands. He performs with other musicians under the name of Andreas Kisser Trio and is busy with the projects Embromation Society , Brazil Rock Stars and guitar workshops .

In 1992 he auditioned for Metallica , temporarily taking over the position of rhythm guitarist James Hetfield , who suffered burns on his hand during a live show. However, he did not get this position.

In 2008 he played with the Scorpions and other Brazilian guest musicians on a tour through Brazil and Mexico . He has long been a fan of the Scorpions and has often played back songs from the band in the past.

In July 2011, Andreas Kisser helped out with Anthrax as Scott Ian's wife was expecting a child. Among other things, he also played at the Big 4 concert in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen . Anthrax and Kisser also played Refuse / Resist by Chaos AD .

recognition

In 2012, Kisser's name was added to the Celebrity Wall of the Cavern Club in Liverpool. It was the first time that the club paid homage to a Brazilian musician and also a metal guitarist. Kisser had previously played a few concerts in the Cavern Club with the Brazilian cover band Clube Big Beatles.

Style and equipment

His melodic solos and characteristic guitar sound, not least the many fast-played passages, became a hallmark of the Thrash sound of the albums that made Sepultura known in the metal sector. In the beginning he mainly used Charvel and Jackson guitars for this. He is currently an endorser of Fender guitars and mainly uses a Stratocaster model.

Private life

Kisser is married to Patricia Perissinotto Kisser and the couple have three children. From 1993 to 2001 he lived in the USA, among other places, and since 2001 Kisser has lived in Brazil again. He is a football fan and ardent supporter of São Paulo FC . In addition to his musical career, Kisser is also engaged in other music-related activities, for example in 2010 he wrote a weekly column for Yahoo! Brasil Music and has hosted the radio show Pegadas de Andreas Kisser ("Songs by Andreas Kisser") on the Brazilian radio station 89FM Rádio Rock since January 2013 with his son Yohan .
