Portnoy with “Siamese Monster” in Rome

Michael Stephen Portnoy (born April 20, 1967 in Long Beach , Long Island , New York ) is an American drummer. He is best known as a founding member of Dream Theater , which he left in 2010.

Life

Born in Long Beach , New York , Mike Portnoy grew up in a Jewish family. Portnoy's father was rock'n'roll - disc jockey . Portnoy says he taught himself to play drums through his father's records when he was eleven. After high school, where he played in several bands, Portnoy moved to Berklee College of Music in Boston , where he met John Petrucci and John Myung , the other founding members of Dream Theater . Together with guitarist John Petrucci Portnoy wrote most of the lyrics for Dream Theater.

Mike Portnoy suffered from alcohol addiction, which he treated with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous . This is dealt with in the lyrics of the songs in the Alcoholics Anonymous Suite , which the fans call it . He has been abstinent since 2000.

On March 23, 2007, Mike Portnoy released his new drum kit instructional video, In Constant Motion . This video consists of three DVDs with a total running time of more than 7 hours, on each of which songs from the albums Train of Thought , Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Octavarium are played. It is similar to the predecessor Liquid Drum Theater . For this video, Mike Portnoy had a drum set, the In Constant Motion Kit , made especially to be able to better play and demonstrate the songs of Transatlantic .

On the 2009 album "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" he wrote the ballad "The Best Of Times" in which he dealt with the death of his father.

After the tragic death of the Avenged Sevenfold drummer , Mike Portnoy helped the band with their studio work on short notice and also represented the late James Owen Sullivan, whose favorite drummer he had been, on the tour for the new album. In September 2010, Portnoy left his band Dream Theater to take a year-long hiatus and pursue other challenges. The rest of the band declined a later requested re-entry.

In January 2011, Portnoy teamed up with Steve Morse , Neal Morse , Dave LaRue and Casey McPherson to record an album. The band operates under the name Flying Colors ; the album was released on March 26, 2012.

Also in 2011, founded Portnoy along with Russell Allen , Mike Orlando and John Moyer , the hard rock - / heavy metal - supergroup Adrenaline Mob appeared, whose self-titled EP in the same year. The album Omertà followed on March 13, 2012 , which includes four original compositions, some cover songs.

Since 2012 Portnoy has been working with Mr. Big bassist Billy Sheehan and guitarist Richie Kotzen on a project that has been called The Winery Dogs since 2013 . The power trio released their self-titled debut album on July 23, 2013. In 2013, Mike Portnoy joined the progressive rock band Bigelf as the new drummer.

In April 2015 it was confirmed that Mike Portnoy would go on tour with Twisted Sister .

Drums

The Albino Monster

The "Albino Monster" was created between the recordings of Train of Thought ( 2003 ) and the band's eighth studio album, Octavarium ( 2005 ). With several other musicians (including Daniel Gildenlöw of the Swedish band Pain of Salvation ) Portnoy were a handful of concerts as "Hammer of the Gods", a Led Zeppelin - cover band . He liked the John Bonham- style drum set used so much that Mike made it the right half of the albino monster.

Ultimately, Mike Portnoy changed his configuration of the albino monster after recording the album Systematic Chaos ; but only the right side of the kit. According to his own statement, it was too big for him and so he had it changed to a "normal" shape, more like the standard drums (toms smaller and a 20 "× 18" bass drum instead of the 26 "× 14"). The Mirage Monster was born from this idea.

The Mirage Monster

The "Mirage Monster" is a Tama Starclassic Mirage Set, a huge, transparent set. There are still two sides as with the Siamese and Albino Monster, but the right side of the kit is a mixture of the right side of the Siamese and Albino monster, which means that the large floor tom of the albino kit and the gong bass drum of the Siamese kit are both available.

Mike Portnoy uses this set on the 2007 Chaos in Motion Tour. The set made its debut at the Gods of Metal festival in Italy on June 3, 2007.
