Neal Robert Morse (born August 2, 1960 in Van Nuys , California ) is an American rock musician . He worked as a singer , multi-instrumentalist , composer and lyricist in the bands Spock's Beard and Transatlantic , which decisively shaped the progressive rock revival of the 1990s . In 2002 he separated from both bands ; Since then, his solo career with texts influenced by Christianity has been the focus of his work. In 2009 Morse became active again with Transatlantic, in 2011 he recorded a CD with the supergroup Flying Colors , which was released in March 2012.

biography

Neal Morse live in Zoetermeer

Neal Morse grew up in San Fernando ( Los Angeles County on). His father was a teacher and choir director . Morse began playing the piano at the age of five and guitar a short time later . Between the ages of 20 and 30, he wrote two musicals , kept himself afloat with part-time jobs, recorded a few country music demos with his brother Richard and tried to get a contract as a singer-songwriter in Los Angeles. After ten years he moved to Europe for a few years. There he played as a street musician and in smaller clubs.

Spock's Beard and Transatlantic

Neal Morse 2006 in Ede

After his return to the USA , he formed the band Spock's Beard in 1992 with his brother Alan and the drummer Nick D'Virgilio , whom he met at a public jam session . Here he played a major role as a composer and lyricist on six albums and was also a singer, keyboard player and second guitarist of the band. The success of the project enabled him to release three solo albums on which he presented the more catchy side of his work with singer-songwriter and rock pieces.

As a source of income during the early phase of Spock's Beard, he continued to work as a bar musician and played in European and especially German Irish pubs. In 1997 he and his bandmate Dave Meros got an engagement in Eric Burdon's tour band, which he gave up in 1999 in favor of his family.

In 2000, Morse and drummer Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater founded the band Transatlantic , a so-called supergroup in which the Swede Roine Stolt from the Flower Kings and the British Pete Trewavas from Marillion represent members of four representatives of the new currents of progressive rock were. Here he has appeared on three studio albums alongside Stolt as a composer and lyricist, followed by several tours through the USA and Europe. Transatlantic reformed after a seven-year break and released their third studio album, The Whirlwind, in October 2009.

Solo career

Neal Morse performing (with Collin Leijenaar on drums)

In 2002, shortly after the Spock's Beard album Snow was released , Morse left both bands after the Christian faith had taken a more central role in his life and he now felt that God had other plans for his life. He describes the process that led to this decision on his autobiographical solo album Testimony and in his 2011 autobiography of the same name. In addition to a shorter guest appearance by Kerry Livgren from Kansas , Mike Portnoy was involved in the recording as a drummer, who has since been a regular guest on Morse's studio albums. Morse then played in the two appearances of Portnoy's Beatles co-association Yellow Matter Custard .

On Morse's second Christian album, One , which was released on November 2, 2004, bassist Randy George was able to establish himself as a regular member of his studio band. The concept album describes the relationship between humanity and God from a Christian perspective and draws parallels to the biblical parable of the prodigal son .

Was released at the end of October 2005 ? (Question Mark) , on which several greats from the field of progressive rock contributed: In addition to Mike Portnoy, Randy George and his former companions Alan Morse and Roine Stolt, the former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett and Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess are represented. His pastor Mark Leniger contributes some saxophone parts. Again it is a concept album, this time based on the biblical story of the tabernacle .

Sola Scriptura ( font alone ) has been on the market since February 23, 2007 . On the album, Morse presents his views on right and wrong beliefs of the denominations of Christianity and goes into the work and life of the reformer Martin Luther . The guitarist Paul Gilbert , known from the bands Racer X and Mr. Big , performed several guitar solos as a guest musician .

In addition to these concept albums in the style of progressive rock, which are still the focus of his work, Morse has released several other CDs with Christian texts. In the series Worship Sessions he presents worship and gospel pieces, while on God Won't Give Up straight rock music dominates. The Songs from the Highway are reduced to vocals and acoustic guitar in the style of Bob Dylan's music . Since the beginning of 2005 he has been running a paid fan club called Inner Circle , whose members he regularly informs about his work in the form of CDs, letters and DVDs .

Morse continues to perform regularly in the US and Europe. This leads to both acoustically held worship -Abenden ( worship concerts ) in churches and community centers as well as appearances in concert halls, in which he is accompanied by a full band. The worship evenings are in the style of the worship services of the Pentecostal church he is visiting, especially geared towards the spiritual experience of the Holy Spirit .
