The Whirlwind is a concept album about the turbulence and uncertainty of life as well as the calm in the middle of this metaphorical hurricane. Transatlantic build on the retro prog from Bridge Across Forever and refer to role models such as Yes and The Beatles , but Neal Morse's style is dominant. The pieces are overall slower, more sedate and less playful than on the previous albums.

reception

The press reacted cautiously to positively to the album. Nik Brückner from Babyblauen Seiten thinks it's “simply boring”. Jörg Schumann speaks of “well-known breaks, well-known melodies, well-known bass lines, well-known moods”, but admits that it “is fun and entertaining”. Michael Rensen from Rock Hard called it "the most terrific prog rock album of the year" in December 2009 and eclipsed magazine included The Whirlwind in its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
