Retro prog
The retro prog is in the early 1990s resulting variant of progressive rock , which the classic prog bands of the original concepts, sounds and ideas 1970s took up and re-processed.
This description does not initially reveal any differences compared to the features of the Neo-Prog movement of the 1980s . In the details, however, there are quite a few substantial differences.
- When choosing the keyboard sounds, there was a return to the keyboard instruments of classical prog, in particular the Mellotron , Hammond organ and piano . The often young retro-prog bands benefit from the possibilities of digital audio technology insofar as the simulation of the desired timbres has made the costly acquisition of the instruments, some of which are out of production, superfluous. The electronic synthesizer sound carpets that dominated neo-prog lost their importance.
- While the intention to create a bombastic , theatrical atmosphere in the style of early Genesis can be seen as the musical quintessence of Neo-Prog, the moods conveyed in Retro-Prog vary on various levels between ironic lightness and heavy melancholy , sometimes even within of a piece.
- Similar to the models from the classic era of progressive rock, the greats of Neo-Prog were almost exclusively of British origin. In contrast, several centers of the Retro-Prog can be named:
