Anecdotes is a Swedish progressive rock band that was formed in 1991. As the former King Crimson co-association, the members see themselves in the tradition of Van der Graaf Generator and Magma and are therefore counted among the vanguard of the retro-prog wave of the 1990s. Their music is characterized by a high proportion of Mellotron and, especially in their early works, by a dominant, heavily distorted electric bass sound.

Band history

Berg, Liljeström and Nordins had already got together in 1990 to perform under the name King Edward with titles from the classic King Crimson era. After the cellist Dahlberg joined in 1991, they renamed themselves and tried to write their own compositions.

The early works Vemod and Nucleus are characterized by an interplay between elegiac passages with restrained vocals on the one hand and thunderstorm-like, fast-paced passages with Liljeström's dominant bass playing, crooked meters and dissonant insertions on guitar and cello on the other. On the two later albums From Within and Gravity , a progressive development towards a more catchy sound garb with influences of alternative rock can be observed. The constant use of Mellotron and the defining Nordic melancholy remain constant.

There were several exchanges with companions from the Swedish scene: In cooperation between Berg, Nordins and members of the Paatos predecessor band Landberk , a band project was launched in 1998 with Morte Macabre , which was dedicated to the Mellotron-heavy new scoring of various horror film soundtracks. Ex- Änglagård guitarist Tord Lindman was responsible for the music video for the single The War is Over from the Gravity album .

The band was able to make a name for itself not only as the main attraction at festivals relevant to the scene in the USA and Europe, but also in Japan, where two anecdote cover bands existed. Anecdote's live activity has now decreased to a minor level, but has not yet come to a standstill.

Former The Church guitarist Marty Willson-Piper has been accompanying the band since 2015 , and he was also a guest musician on the album Until All The Ghosts Are Gone , which was released in the same year .
