Vemod (Swedish for ' melancholy ') is the debut album by the Swedish progressive rock band Anecdotes . It was released in 1993 on the band's own label Virtalevy.

Creation and publication

After the beginnings as a King Crimson co-band, Anecdotes recorded a demo with their own compositions in 1991 and 1992 . These pieces were recorded again in the spring of 1993 for the debut album. Per Wiberg and Pär Ekström performed as guest musicians. A bonus title was added for the 1995 Japanese version. This was also released in 2011 on a limited, remastered LP edition.

style

Anecdotes play on Vemod by King Crimson influenced retro prog with Mellotron , powerful bass and often dissonant guitars. Similarities to Änglagård's hubris can also be seen. Occasionally the piano , flugelhorn , cornet and cello are used. There are calm and rocky passages. Both Liljeström and Dahlberg are used as singers. The title of the album is programmatic, because the mood is mostly dark and melancholy.

reception

The album was mostly received positively and underscored Sweden's role as an important center for retro prog emerging in the early 1990s. Rachel Worksop from Wondrous Stories magazine criticizes Vemod for being mostly boring and poorly produced. Udo Gerhards from Babyblauen Seiten , however, praises the enthusiasm and dynamism of the album and Paul Collins from Allmusic finds it fascinating and promising. The eclipsed magazine included Vemod in its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
