Sven R. Hartmann
Sven Richard Hartmann (born February 22, 1932 in New York City ) is an American physicist .
life and work
Hartmann studied at Union College in Schenectady with a bachelor's degree in 1954. He then continued his studies at the University of Minnesota , but was soon called up for the Air Force , where he spent two years as a lieutenant and with physical tasks on the Wright Air Development Center in Dayton . He received his doctorate in 1961 from the University of California, Berkeley , under Erwin Hahn . In 1962 he became an assistant professor at Columbia University , where he received a full professorship in 1976.
His dissertation with Hahn was on a double resonance experiment in NMR and they introduced the technique of cross polarization . In 1964, together with Isaac Abella and her student Norman Kurnit, he succeeded in demonstrating photon echoes in laser spectroscopy in analogy to the spin echoes discovered by Erwin Hahn .
In 1983 he received the RW Wood Prize . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America . From 1963 he was a Sloan Research Fellow and 1978 Guggenheim Fellow .
Daniel R. Grischkowsky and Alexander Lvovsky are among his students .
