Martin Howard Willson-Piper (born May 7, 1958 in Stockport , England ) is a British songwriter, musician and poet. He was the longtime guitarist of the Australian psychedelic rock band The Church . Willson-Piper grew up in Liverpool , played in various bands there before touring Europe as a street musician in the late 1970s. In the early 1980s he moved to Australia , where he became a permanent member of The Church within a few days.

Willson-Piper's sonic trademark was initially the bell-like, psychedelic sound of his twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar. Over the years, however, he developed an unmistakable style that also incorporates influences from Krautrock , Space Rock and Ambient . A clear dividing line between rhythm and solo work can hardly be drawn in Willson-Piper's playing. Both elements are characterized by unconventional voicings, arpeggios and, above all, the use of a volume pedal, with which he can fade in and out individual notes and chords without attack. His preferred effects include playing the whammy bar as a soloist and a carefully used wah-wah .

In addition to his work with The Church, he published several solo albums and participated in numerous collaborations. His solo works are more oriented towards classical songwriting, but also stand out for their very different musical experiments.

In addition, he has made guest appearances with numerous other artists: for many years he was guitarist with All About Eve and recorded an album with some members of this band in 1997 under the project name Seeing Stars . He worked with Jules Shear , Aimee Mann , Linda Perry , Brix Smith and Tom Verlaine . In 2004 he played for a year with the Australian punk veterans The Saints .

Together with Andy "Dare" Mason he also forms the Duo Noctorum . With the German-Swedish Niko Röhlcke, guitarist and keyboardist in the Swedish band Weeping Willows , he composes and produces under the name MOAT . Since 2015 he has also accompanied the Swedish progressive rock band Anekdoten on tour and plays the guitar on their album Until All The Ghosts Are Gone .

Since 2013 Willson-Piper has maintained an extensive online blog, the In Deep Music Archive. On this website, he writes articles almost daily about emerging, established, controversial or unknown artists and bands.

Willson-Piper travels a lot and lived a. a. in New York , Amsterdam and Stockholm . He is married to the German violinist Olivia Willson-Piper. He has two daughters from previous relationships, Signe (* 1989) and Charlotte (* 1996).
