history

founding

After The Sound ended in 1988, Adrian Borland began a solo career. In 1994 The Convent planned to cover the piece Winning and asked Borland what a deep connection arose from: Borland became the band's “special guest” and sang the song himself, also in collaboration with Carlo van Putten. Borland is also the vocalist for Winning on the band's 1998 live album, For a Fistful of Deutschmark (Collection of Live Recordings 1992–1997) .

(One of Borland's last live performances took place in 1994 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck in the Kleinbahnhof (KUZ) cultural center together with The Convent. In 2018, the documentary Walking in the Opposite Direction - Documentary about The Sound & Adrian Borland shown as a German premiere ; afterwards the original drummer from The Sound, Mike Dudley, played with the musicians from The Convent at the KUZ as a souvenir.)

Borland and van Putten had become close friends and Borland was often a guest of van Putten, who at that time still had his main focus of life in northern Germany and lived in Vollersode . Both realized the first two albums of their joint project "White Rose Transmission". In 1997 Borland also released his solo album 5:00 AM and dedicated the piece City Speed to Carlo van Putten.

In April 1999, Adrian Borland committed suicide in London suicide and 700 Miles of Desert thus became his last completed work during his lifetime; his last solo album (Harmony and Destruction) was posthumously completed and released in 2002.

David Maria Gramse and Florian Bratmann, who was keyboardist for The Convent from 1988 to 1992, also contributed to the two albums by White Rose Transmission.

In 2002, The Convent provided support for The Chameleons ; In 2000 and 2001 van Putten had already supported the band together with Amanda Palmer ( Dresden Dolls ), especially in Germany and Great Britain, and van Putten had performed as White Rose Transmission. In 2000 in Paris van Putten sang a cover version of Kraftwerk (Radioaktivity) while he was accompanied by Palmer on the keyboard.

In 2002 van Putten moved to the Netherlands and in the same year also co-founded the Dead Guitars . 2006 took van Putten; next to Gramse and Bratmann; his friend Rob Keijzer joined the project and they published Bewitched & Bewildered . Marty Willson-Piper ( The Church ) was also involved in the recordings (Martha Harbor, Circle). Mark Burgess from The Chameleons plays the electric bass in some pieces .

In 2008 the album Spiders in the Mind Web was released, by Frank Weyzig (ex- Clan of Xymox , singer with Born for Bliss); was produced. He also played keyboards, bass and guitar; the latter also together with Rob Keijzer.

On November 21, 2009 the Dead Guitars played in Messajero ( Mönchengladbach ) and White Rose Transmission appeared as the opening act. Carlo von Putten often combines his projects; on March 28, 2009 it was his original band The Convent , who supported the Dead Guitars in the Tower (Bremen).

“The musicians of all bands like and appreciate each other very much and give each other the freedom they need. There is no competition, because with each band I do something different, otherwise I wouldn't need three bands. "

- Carlo van Putten in an interview with BODYSTYLER Electrozine 2011

Between 2011 and 2015 van Putten went on occasional minimalist summer tours with the Dead Guitars , which he later did with White Rose Transmission.

“It was like magic, not just for the audience. We had incredible fun in this atmosphere and the fans were absolutely thrilled. "

criticism

“CONCLUSION: Whether WHITE ROSE TRANSMISSION, DEAD GUITARS, THE CONVENT or BORN FOR BLISS; all of these bands play a variant of dark, disturbing and beguiling music that has nothing to do with standardized gothic rock. Weyzig, Keijser, and Van Putten move in every form of appearance on an independent level. The climax is the reserved and poignant version of "Silent Air", which eleven, or now twelve years after ADRIAN BORLAND's death, still makes us aware of what painful turning point his suicide was and is.
