The Sound was a British post-punk band in the early 1980s .

history

The Sound emerged from the remnants of the punk band The Outsiders , in which singer and guitarist Adrian Borland and bassist Graham Bailey (who used the surname Green until 1983) had played together. While both were initially active as a duo with Second Layer , The Sound soon developed into the main project. The highly acclaimed debut album Jeopardy was recorded for only £ 800 on the record company Korova, a sub-label of Warner Music , and was released in 1980. The following record, From The Lions Mouth , produced by Hugh Jones , was even more successful in 1981 and was based on musical role models such as Joy Division and label mates Echo & The Bunnymen .

After Korova had called for a more commercial orientation, the group released All Fall Down in 1982, a rather experimental record that failed critics and fans. The record company and band split up, The Sound signed a contract with the independent label Statik. Although the EP Shock Of Daylight (1984) and the album Heads And Hearts (1985) were positively received, the group could no longer follow on from their previous successes. At about this time, Borland developed a mental disorder with a clear tendency towards depression , which increasingly destabilized the band structure.

Soon after the release of the live album In The Hothouse , Statik went bankrupt in 1986 . The Sound released their last record Thunder Up in 1987 on Play It Again Sam . After several appointments had to be canceled on the subsequent tour due to Borland's mental illness, the band finally broke up in early 1988.

Adrian Borland then started a solo career, albeit with only moderate commercial success. In April 1999, he committed suicide while throwing himself in front of a train in London. Keyboardist Colvin "Max" Mayers died in 1993 of AIDS .

In honor of the band and especially of Adrian Borland, the In2TheSound project with original drummer Mike Dudley has existed since 2018 . The singer is Carlo van Putten ( The Convent , Dead Guitars ), who had already worked with Adrian Borland on the White Rose Transmission project . The band has performed in Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany and only plays pieces from the original band.

“The past and its tragedies are always with us; but we can save the essence of creativity that produced so many great songs and carry it into the future to keep it alive not only for fans who are still listening, but also for those who have not yet discovered it . "
