Carlo van Putten (* 1962 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) is a Dutch songwriter and singer and was co-founder of The Convent , White Rose Transmission , Dead Guitars and In2TheSound.

Life

The Convent

Since the father was a member of the Dutch army , the family came to Zeven in northern Germany in 1975 , where there was a Dutch garrison with additional infrastructure in neighboring Seedorf from 1963 to 2006 . Carlo van Puten attended the Dutch Prins Willem Alexander School until 1976 and when his parents divorced, Carlo followed his mother to Utrecht . In 1979 he returned to his father in Zeven because his mother had died.

In 1981 he was a member of the punk band Fleischextrakt , who sang in English and German, and in 1983 he was an electronic wave band with The Invisible Reality . In 1984 at Blackout , who tended towards Progressive Rock , he met Joachim “Jojo” Brandt.

In 1985 he founded the band The Convent, which still exists today in and of which he is the only remaining founding member. The band released two singles in 1987 and 1989 ; the second was initially marketed by the band itself and this is how Red Sunshine Records (later Red Sun Records) with post office box in Zeven was created; from 1988 in Hambergen because van Putten had moved to Vollersode .

In addition to van Putten, Jojo Brandt has established himself as the band's songwriter , who followed van Putten into the band in 1991. The current line-up also consists of Carsten Lienke (bass), Stefan Bornhorst (keyboard) and Roland Kaufmann (drums), with whom van Putten often works on other projects.

There is an intense relationship with Mark Burgess ( The Chameleons ). He has produced parts of the 1993 first album ( Counting the Stars ) and the full 1994 second album ( Tales from the Frozen Forest ), and the collaboration and influence extends over the band's subsequent albums.

In connection with their own tour in 2002 the band was also a supporter of the Chameleons on their tour; the last appearance took place in October 2002 in Bochum . The year turned into a turning point for The Convent, which did not dissolve, but whose members pursued other projects and only appeared more publicly since 2016.

The Electric Family

In 2003 van Putten was involved in Tom “The Perc” Redecker's project The Electric Family . Here he met the ex-Convent member Ben Schadow , who was now with Bernd Begemann & Die Befreiung . On the plate Ice Cream Phoenix worked next to them and a. also Rolf Kirschbaum (Pachinko Fake), Hermann Lammers-Meyer ( Emsland Hillbillies ), Ingo Yorck (alias Ingo Griese ) and Rainer Kirchmann (both formerly Pankow ), Tex Morton (formerly Lolitas ), Volker Kahrs (formerly Grobschnitt ), Burghard Rausch ( formerly Agitation Free , then Bel Ami ) and Ulla Meinecke with.

White Rose Transmission

In 1988, following his time with The Sound , Adrian Borland started a solo career. In 1994 The Convent planned to cover the piece Winning and asked Borland what a deep connection arose from: Borland became the band's “special guest” and sang the song himself, also in collaboration with Carlo van Putten. Borland was often privately in northern Germany with Van Putten and also roamed the Bremen district with him .

“... like back then with the recordings of“ 700 Miles of Desert ”in Bremen. Adrian poured red wine over my seats when I had to brake. "

- Carlo van Putten 2011

From 1995 Borland was involved in the creation of the first two albums of the joint project White Rose Transmission. The second record 700 Miles of Desert from 1999 is therefore also the last Borland work to be completed during his lifetime. The last track on this album was the namesake for a new project: Dead Guitars . In 1997 Borland had also released his solo album 5:00 AM and dedicated the piece City Speed to Carlo van Putten.

After Borland's death, van Putten continued to run White Rose Transmission with varying degrees of support; especially from 2015 he went on his minimalist tours with members of the Dutch band Aestrid.

"Both [Thomas Marcin and Robert Smeekes] are founding members of the band Aestrid, my favorite indie band from Utrecht."

- Carlo van Putten 2019

Dead Guitars

Carlo van Putten moved to the Netherlands in 2002 and in the same year was also co-founder of Dead Guitars, which released their debut album in June 2007 and supported The Mission on their European tour in spring 2008 .

Carlo von Putten often combines his projects; on March 28, 2009 it was his original band The Convent , who supported the Dead Guitars in the Tower (Bremen). On November 21, 2009 the Dead Guitars played in Messajero ( Mönchengladbach ) and White Rose Transmission appeared as the opening act.

“The musicians of all bands like and appreciate each other very much and give each other the freedom they need. There is no competition, because with each band I do something different, otherwise I wouldn't need three bands. You all mean a lot to me, are an important part of my life and I have experienced a lot with you. Inconceivable without! "

- Carlo van Putten in an interview with BODYSTYLER Electrozine 2011

From around 2011 to 2015 the Dead Guitars also went on occasional minimalist summer tours, which van Putten then went on with White Rose Transmission.

“It was like magic, not just for the audience. We had unbelievable fun in this atmosphere and the fans were absolutely thrilled .. [..] .. Of course a certain popularity is nice, but the future is clearly directed towards the further development of our music. I don't really care whether the setting is a big stage or the living room at home again. "

- Carlo van Putten 2011

The Dead Guitars have been on pause since mid-2018 and the rest of the band performed as The Wide with their own material. In addition, the guitarist Ralf Aussem moved to Berlin in 2019, so that his position at both The Wide and Dead Guitars is vacant.

"Carlo wanted a break and we were eager for a sequel .. [..] .. Over the years we have written a lot of songs that didn't seem particularly suitable for the 'Deadies' repertoire"

- Peter Brough 2018

The Amsterdam Tapes

On June 4, 2006 Carlo van Putten was involved in a Dutch event, which took place in honor of Adrian Borland in Paradiso (Amsterdam) and presented Adrian Borland's album The Amsterdam Tapes (released posthumously in the same year) , which was recorded on recordings from 1992 based. The event band that evening were:

  • Bass: Bart van Poppel (The Analogues)

MGT

In 2016, ex- The Mission guitarist Mark Gimini Thwaite (MGT) released his solo album Volumes , where he had worked with numerous musicians. In addition to EX bandmate Wayne Hussey, numerous musicians took part: Ville Valo ( HIM ), Miles Hunt and Erica Nockalls ( The Wonder Stuff ), Ricky Warwick ( Black Star Riders , Thin Lizzy ), Raymond Watts (PIG, KMFDM ), Saffron ( Republica ), Julianne Regan ( All About Eve ), Ashton Nyte (The Awakening) and Andi Sex Gang (alias Andreas McElligott).

Carlo van Putten brought in the piece Sweet Valentine ; which is also available as a YouTube video.

In2TheSound

In 2016 the documentary was created: Walking in the Opposite Direction - Documentary about The Sound & Adrian Borland in which Carlo van Putten also participated as an interview partner. The film was screened at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2017 and there van Putten met Mike Dudley, the original drummer of the band The Sound . The idea of a joint project was born.

The plan matured in 2018 to show the documentary as a German premiere in Osterholz-Scharmbeck (Kulturkino Oscar) and then play it live. The background was that one of Borland's last live performances in 1994 at Kulturzentrum Kleinbahnhof (KUZ) had taken place together with The Convent. On April 28, 2018, the film was shown twice in a row and then the new formation with Mike Dudley and the musicians from The Convent played again at the KUZ to commemorate 1994. (The event was in principle repeated on February 8, 2020 in the Musichall Worpswede .)

Mike Dudley and The Convent continue to perform and are now being advertised as In2TheSound; Carlo van Putten came up with this name in order to create a reference to the original The Sound and not infringe any naming rights. They performed under this name in particular in Portugal (January 19, 2019 Porto and July 6, 2019 Lisbon ) and on December 1, 2019 in the Netherlands ( Rotterdam ).
