Wave (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wave , originally the acronym for New Wave , is an umbrella term for several areas of music related to New Wave, which are known, for example, as Cold Wave , Dark Wave , Doom Wave, Electro Wave , Ethereal Wave and Gothic Wave . Wave as an acronym has been used since around 1984 and was used in numerous music magazines and compilation titles, such as Pop & Wave , Wave Ballads , Wave Party or Wave Romantics .

The term "post-wave" has been used by the music press since the second half of the 1980s. This describes the musical output and the cultural innovations after the end of the wave era. However, since the wave movement is divided into different currents and chronologically deviating stages (e.g. New Wave, Electro Wave, Cold Wave and New German Wave ), it is often difficult to chronologically record post-wave. However, the period from the late 1980s onwards with the resurgence of musical styles such as Madchester , Shoegazing , Acid House , Techno , Grunge or Britpop in Europe is roughly outlined .

The term post-wave was used, among other things, for former gothic bands who turned to pop and hard rock at the end of the 1980s , for synth pop in the 1990s, for electroclash or in general for varieties of pop and rock music that developed removed from the style-typical sounds of the 1980s - for example the Yamaha DX7 sound - or based on a modern production method, although some elements of the wave era were retained in the music.
