Life

Childhood and youth

Ville Hermanni Valo was born on November 22, 1976 in the Helsinki district of Vallila , but only spent the first few months of his life there. He grew up in the Finnish capital Helsinki in the Oulunkylä district . Oulunkylä is about 6 km north of Helsinki city center. There he lived, with his parents Kari and Anita Valo and his seven years younger brother Jesse in an apartment building. His mother Anita is of Hungarian descent, his father Kari is Finnish. His father was a taxi driver and later the owner of a sex shop (since Villes was 14 years old). According to Valo, his mother Anita worked for the city council.

music

Ville Valo has been interested in music since early childhood. He plays electric bass, guitar, keyboard, piano and drums. He went to a music school. The school in Oulunkylä was one of the few schools that had music classes in Helsinki at the time. In the third grade, Valo passed the aptitude test for the music class. He chose the electric bass as an instrument because he liked Gene Simmons ( Kiss ) and Steve Harris ( Iron Maiden ). Mikko Henrik Julius Paananen, the bassist, and Mikko Viljami Lindström (* 1976), the guitarist of HIM, attended the same school as Valo. Paananen, however, is two years older and went to a higher class. Although Valo was in a music school, he never took singing lessons or sang in a choir. He even said that he was ashamed of his voice at the time.

At school he played bass or drums in several bands, some of which were school bands ( jazz and Dixieland bands). At times he played in six or seven bands at the same time. Two of these bands ( Aurora and Donits Osmo Experience ) released a few songs on sampler CDs ( Monk Rock , 1992 and Rumba 10 - A Collection of Fresh Finnish Underground Rock. 1993), which contain music from Finnish newcomer bands.

Valo and his friends often went to punk or rock concerts in clubs. For example, there was the Lepakko ( Bat ) Club in Helsinki , which also served as a youth center and where they often stayed. The club was demolished in 1999. Paanen's older brother was a partner in a club called the Teatro , so they often stayed there. Paanen, Pätkä (HIM's ex-drummer) and Valo even worked in the club. Through club visits, they also developed relationships with people who had something to say in the music business and were helpful to them in some way or who later became famous (e.g. Apocalyptica).

Without a degree, he dropped out of school at the age of 15 to become a musician.

Career

HIM

His main work was created as a singer and songwriter for his band HIM . The band was founded in 1991 under the name His Infernal Majesty (later the name was abbreviated to HIM ) and split up in late 2017. HIM have released an EP, eight studio albums and one live album. In Germany, HIM are best known for the single Join Me (in Death) , which was number one in the charts for several weeks at the end of 1999 / beginning of 2000 and was often played on television and radio.

Solo projects

In 2004 he recorded the song Bittersweet with Apocalyptica and Lauri Ylönen from The Rasmus . After the world tour of the fifth HIM album Dark Light , which was released in 2005, Ville Valo devoted himself to various solo projects.

At the beginning of 2007, the cover version of Summer Wine , sung by Valo together with actress Natalia Avelon and taken from the film soundtrack of Das wilde Leben , was in the top ten of the singles charts for weeks; Among other things, it reached number one in Finland and was number two in Germany for several weeks. The song was composed by Lee Hazlewood , the best known earlier interpretation is by him and Nancy Sinatra .

On March 20, 2020 Valo released three songs under the project name "VV" on various streaming portals , which can be purchased online as the EP titled "Gothica Fennica Vol. 1" .
