Summer Wine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Summer Wine is a 1966 song written by Lee Hazlewood that became a successful duet with Nancy Sinatra .

history

The piece was first sung and published by Hazlewood and Suzi Jane Hokom in 1966 , but it was not a great success. The title became famous towards the end of the same year when Hazlewood took it up again with the country singer Nancy Sinatra, who was very successful at the time. This second version was originally just the B-side of Sugar Town , but when the song became popular worldwide it was released as a standalone single in 1968. Summer Wine was the prelude to a series of duets by Hazlewood and Sinatra.

Lyrics

The English language song describes a man walking through a city with silver spurs . A woman notices him and invites him to a summer punch with strawberries and cherries. (An “angel's kiss” refers to an alcoholic drink in which you can't taste the alcohol.) She asks him to pull off his silver spurs and spend time with her. The woman keeps pouring punch for him until his eyelids become heavy and he can no longer speak. He tries to get back on his feet, but fails. When he wakes up again, the sun is shining on his face. He has a hangover and finds that his spurs and money are gone. He still demands more from the punch.

The lines sung by the man and the woman are formulated in the respective first-person form, with the man singing in the past tense simple past , but the woman singing in the present tense . This makes it seem as if the man is telling the story from his memory. The lines sung by the woman, which always recur identically as a refrain , appear embedded in it like a quote.
