The name was the "English in the 18th century bowl " = bowl borrowed, in turn, to the Old English term " bolla " = cup back. Today "bowl" is the most common translation for the term. In the 19th century, one of the most popular bowls today, the woodruff-based maypole, was developed. The first punch was probably served much earlier, at least that is suggested by a book from the Fulda monastery library. In a document from 1417 a drink is mentioned, which consists of wine, rose petals, spruce needles and honey and was served in a punch-like vessel. The punch was particularly popular as a party drink between the 1950s and 1970s.

Punch variants

There are numerous different recipes and varieties of punch. The white wine is infused with juice, lemonade or sparkling wine. Other spirits such as rum can be added to refine the punch. Red wine is sometimes used instead of white wine. There are also punch variants without alcohol, which are also suitable for children. Fruits and herbs provide the taste, and some recipes also include ice cream.

A punch is usually served cold, sometimes with the addition of ice cubes. A well-known exception is the Feuerzangenbowle . Other hot mixed drinks made from alcohol, fruits or spices that are served in a bowl-like vessel are called punch . In cultures outside Germany, there is usually no distinction between punch and punch.

While there is no separate name for the fruit in the punch in most regions of Germany, the term “Möppchen” (pronounced: Möppschen) is a widespread term in the Rhineland. The pugs are usually placed in the alcohol one day in advance and therefore absorb a lot of alcohol, so that the mere consumption of the pugs is equivalent to drinking the punch in terms of alcohol content.

Chill and serve

To keep the punch cold on hot summer days, you can use a special punch bowl that cools the punch with ice on the outside. This special vessel was developed for the “ cold duck ”, a punch made from wine, champagne and lemons. Ice cubes made from frozen fruit juice to match the taste or a previously frozen part of the punch are often used for cooling. The so-called punch egg , a container to be filled with ice that keeps the punch at a cool drinking temperature without watering it down, is one possibility.

The punch is usually served in typical, also thick-bellied glasses or ceramic cups, which belong to a set with the punch bowl. Small bowls skewers are used to get the fruit pieces out of the liquid. Metal bowl skewers can be in the shape of small forks. There are also single-pronged plastic skewers.
