history
Numerous archaeological finds in the area of the city and municipality of Zeven and more than 30 stone and Bronze Age barrows prove that the settlement in and near Zeven goes back to prehistory. The place was first mentioned in 986 as "kivinan à Heeslingen" (Kivinan zu Heeslingen) in the oldest document of the nearby Heeslingen Monastery , which was moved to Zeven in 1141. Kivinanstrasse in Zeven is reminiscent of the oldest documented form of the name Kivinan , pronounced probably ['ki: finan] . Later forms of the name are Sciuena (1141), Cyuena (1158), Scevena and Tzevena . The etymologically uncertain name remained three-syllable for a long time, while the initial [k] was moved to [ts] earlier.
The Zeven monastery , whose church has been under the patronage of St. Vitus since relics were transferred from Corvey in 1231 , played an important role for the place from then on. Zeven was historically significant because of two events that took place here: on the one hand, through a conference in May 1694 with representatives of Bremen and Sweden, at which the status of the city and duchy of Bremen was discussed, and, on the other hand, through the Zeven Convention during the Seven Years' War In September 1757 an armistice was signed between the commander of the Hanoverian and that of the French troops. The regulation did not last, however, as the British king refused recognition.
After the Congress of Vienna , Zeven belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover . On behalf of the Hanoverian king, Carl Friedrich Gauß came to Zeven in 1824/25 to complete the trigonometric survey of the kingdom. He took measurements from the steeple of St. Viti Church. From 1866 Zeven belonged to the Prussian province of Hanover . The spot remained the seat of a district office; from 1885 a royal Prussian district administrator ruled in Zeven.
During this time, the population remained constant at around 1,200 for almost a hundred years. The population did not increase, in particular because of the rampant cholera and the large number of emigrants to America. Only at the beginning of the 20th century could an upswing be recorded. In 1906 the railway line from Zeven to Rotenburg (Wümme) was opened and Zeven received street lighting in the form of oil lamps. In 1929 Zeven was allowed to transition to the municipal constitution. However, the district of Zeven was dissolved shortly afterwards in 1932 and merged with Bremervörde to form a new district of Bremervörde .
Before the Second World War , Zeven had 3,233 inhabitants. After the war, this number almost doubled due to the influx of refugees. The city was occupied by British troops, who also quartered themselves in the living quarters, so that there was a great shortage of living space in the city. The expansion of the city was therefore in the foreground in the post-war years. Zeven also developed into an important regional industrial location in the post-war period. The industrial area Zeven-Aspe, in the south of the city, is home to a number of nationally known industrial companies. Another industrial area was established in the north of the city (Nord-West-Ring).
In 1965 the Zeven municipality was founded . In 1977 the Bremervörde district was dissolved; Since then, Zeven has belonged to the Rotenburg (Wümme) district . In 2001/02 the city center was redesigned. Lange Straße, which had been a busy thoroughfare until then, was converted into a pedestrian zone and traffic was directed via a bypass road. In 2009 the Zevener western bypass was opened, which connects the federal road 71 and the Bremer road.
Incorporations
As part of the regional reform in Lower Saxony , the previously independent municipalities of Badenstedt, Brauel, Brümmerhof , Brüttendorf, Oldendorf and Wistedt were incorporated on March 1, 1974.
religion
The St. Viti Church on the cloister aisle belongs to the Stade district of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover . The Catholic Christ-König-Kirche on the street Hoftohorn is a branch church of the Rotenburg parish Corpus-Christi . The New Apostolic Church on Kirchhofsallee belongs to the New Apostolic Church in Northern Germany .

coat of arms
Blazon : “Split between red and gold (yellow); in front two slanted silver (white) keys with turned away beards; behind in a black oil kettle, standing the silver (white) nimbed, red clad St. Vitus holding a green palm branch in his right hand and a black book in his left. Under the shield there is a silver (white) band with the inscription "Stadt Zeven" in black letters; the "S" and the "Z" in red. " | |
Reasons for the coat of arms: The coat of arms awarded in 1932 reminds with the crossed keys of the centuries-long rule of the Archbishopric of Bremen until the transition to Sweden after the Thirty Years War ; the St. Vitus was the patron saint of the Benedictine Order of Heeslingen's nunnery, founded in 1141, and is the patron saint of the city. |

Children's runs were offered for young runners, with start and finish in the Zeven pedestrian zone. In 1963, the so-called Budel-Seedorf Agreement formally regulated the cooperation between Germany and the Netherlands. German soldiers moved to Budel , in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant , and Dutch soldiers were stationed at the Seedorf barracks, near Zeven. The new 41st Panzer Brigade in Seedorf was to become a combat unit with almost 3,000 men, which was always ready for action. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Dutch soldiers stayed in Seedorf and, from 1993, formed the German-Dutch corps with German units. Families of professional soldiers moved to Zeven. Dutch schools were founded ( Oranje Nassau School Primary School and Prins Willem Alexander School cooperative comprehensive school ), a kindergarten and an outpatient clinic were created, and Dutch customs and festivals were introduced.
