About this picture

Wohnste ( Low German : Woonst ) is the northernmost municipality in the Lower Saxony joint municipality of Sittensen in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district . It is divided into the two places Wohnste and Klein Wohnste. In the community of Wohnste, the Low German language is primarily used in both private and public areas.

geography

Most residential cemetery chapel

The community of Wohnste consists of the two clustered villages Klein and Groß Wohnste and the associated Feldmark, which includes the Wohnster Mühlenmoor in the south / southwest. The eastern part of Klein Wohnste lies on the Ramme , a stream that flows south through the villages of Ramshausen and Nüttel, which are part of the municipality of Vierden , and finally flows into the Oste , a tributary of the Elbe , in Sittensen .

As the northernmost municipality of the Sittensen municipality, Wohnste is surrounded on three sides by the Stade district : the municipality of Ahlerstedt is in the northwest , while the municipality of Sauensiek is adjacent to the northeast and east . Until 1932 Wohnste belonged to the district of Zeven , then to the district of Bremervörde , which was merged with the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) on August 1, 1977 . In terms of landscape, Wohnste belongs to the Harsefelder Geest, a sub-region of the Zevener Geest, which was formed as a gentle hilly landscape with only slight differences in altitude by the sandy and loamy glacier deposits (glacial till ) of the Ice Age . Wohnste is mainly agricultural. But there are also a number of retail and larger commercial establishments.

geology

The geological formation in northern Germany about ranges from 600 to 500 million years back to the late, the Precambrian part of the Proterozoic . At that time, today's landmass of Northern Germany was in high southern latitudes on the northern edge of the supercontinent Gondwana . This broke into several smaller and larger lithospheric plates . One of these microplates, known as Avalonia , drifted northwards and collided with the Ur-European Baltica in the Silurian Mountains about 450–420 million years ago . The collision continued the Caledonian mountain formation to the east, which had already started in the north and came to a standstill about 410 million years ago. Further microplates accumulated in the Carboniferous from the south about 300 million years ago and thus caused the Variscan mountain formation , the remnants of which are the Central German mountains today.

The municipality is located north of Wohnste nordvariszischen deformation front on which to Avalonia belonging Lüneburg solid and thus belongs to the oldest part of Europe (Paleo-Europe). Avalonia was lowered by the acting tectonic forces and thus created space in the Permian for an extensive marine area that penetrated far into Central Europe. The salt deposits ( Zechstein ) in all of Northern Germany date from this time . The North German Basin did not change its position in the following millions of years, but was raised and lowered again several times and thus served as a catchment basin for the sediment masses of the former Caledonian mountain ranges that were removed by erosion . The sediment filling of the North German Basin reached thicknesses of up to 10 kilometers in this way.

history

The first written mention as a Wodensete comes from the year 1258 . It is a document pertaining to Hermann Schucke's church tithe issued by the Bishop of Verden. In another document from the Bishop of Verden from 1263 , the place is named as Wodensethe . The name Wodenstede has been handed down from the 14th century . Although controversial, it is assumed that the root word "Wod-" is derived from the name of the god Wodan . That would mean that the place was named after the Germanic god in pre-Christian times, i.e. before 814 . Wodan was the supreme god of the Longobards . These settled directly north and east of the place and possibly into the place, as is indicated by the name.

With the exception of a few remains in the northern heath, the Longobards moved south from 150 AD and settled in northern Italy. The unused land was settled by the advancing Saxons, who presumably advanced upstream via the Oste and its tributaries into the orphaned land. The core of the settlement at that time is suspected on the basis of excavations between Klein Meckelsen and Sittensen . From here, it is believed, the places Vierden and Ippensen could have been founded in the early Middle Ages . Due to the size and shape of the field mark, Wohnste may be older. What is certain is that the place must have existed for some time around 1258 and was probably founded by the Longobards or Saxons before 800 .

In pre-Christian times, Wohnste belonged to the Sturmigau , whose main town was Verden . After the subjugation of the Saxon tribe by the Franks in 814, missionary work began, and the newly founded parishes were largely based on the borders of the old Börden . Wohnste would have been assigned to the parish of Sittensen. Received documents show, however, that at least Klein Wohnste was assigned to the parish of Hollenstedt in the High Middle Ages ; the oldest mention dates back to May 3, 1390. The Woonster Döör (residential door) of the Hollenstedter Church, which has meanwhile been walled up, still bears witness to this today . This side entrance was used by the parishioners from Wohnster, as they usually arrived too late due to the long march. What is certain, however, is that the parish was changed to the parish of Sittens in the course of the 15th century.

Two documents from 1426 mention a Rammehof in Groß Wohnste, although the Ramme does not flow through this place, but through Klein Wohnste. This gave rise to the assumption that Klein Wohnste may be the older part of the village that had to be abandoned because of an epidemic (possibly the plague ). The name of the farm could have been taken with the resettlement to Groß Wohnste. Klein Wohnste would therefore have been repopulated again later. However, there are no conclusive historical documents for this oral tradition.

politics

Since the local elections in 2016, the local council has been composed as follows:

  • CDU : 3 council members
  • SPD : 2 council members
  • WFB : 1 council member
  • Village list : 3 council members

Sports

The MTV Wohnste sports club is located in the municipality of Wohnste . The club was founded in 1913 and today has two sports fields and a sports hall that was greatly expanded in 1987. Initially there was only gymnastics and athletics in the club. Today the club comprises six different branches: badminton , soccer , bounce ball , table tennis , gymnastics and folk dance .

traffic

The community is about eight kilometers north of Sittensen . The localities Groß Wohnste and Klein Wohnste are connected via the K 131 running in east-west direction, which leads to the L 130 in the east. The K 121 also runs through Groß Wohnste, which in turn connects to the L 130 to the south-east and thus connects the community to the A 1 via the Sittensen junction .

The K 121 has a well-developed cycle path that leads to Sittensen. Residents of all ages are also connected by a cycle path.
