About this picture

Hepstedt ( Low German : Hepst ) is a municipality in the Tarmstedt municipality in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony .

history

Hepstedt 1004 first mentioned when King Henry II. The monastery Kemnade in Bodenwerder at the Weser Hepstidi confirmed as possession.

In the Ummel state forest there is a so-called “Russian cemetery” with five graves. There are buried prisoners of war who were placed by the Stalag XB in Sandbostel to work in Hepstedt. Because they were poorly cared for, many of these prisoners of war died - some were shot for minor offenses. The mayor of Hepstedt had the prisoners buried in a burial place in the forest. In 2012, an employee of the Sandbostel Memorial, Ronald Sperling, determined the names of the prisoners buried in the Ummel.

Origin of the place name

Old names of the place are around 1004 Hepstidi (Heinrich II.).

Stidi or stide is the East Westphalian form of stede and stands for “place”. The first part of the word comes from Old Saxon from the word hiopo for "thorn bush". The term is similar in the English language: hip for "thorn bush", or in Norwegian: hjupa for "rose hip". From this it can be concluded that Hepstedt refers to a site near thorn bushes.

religion

68% of the population are Protestant, 2% Catholic. The Lutherans include the parish Kirchtimke in the church district Osterholz-Scharmbeck the Church of Hanover . On the Reformed side, Hepstedt is part of the Ringstedt community in Synodal Association VIII of the Evangelical Reformed Church . The Catholics belong to the parish Corpus Christi in Rotenburg (Wümme) , which has a branch church ( Christ König ) in Zeven .
