Kannus [ ˈkɑnːus ] is a city in western Finland with 5502 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Middle Ostrobothnian landscape about halfway between the cities of Kokkola (42 km east) and Ylivieska (38 km east). The neighboring communities of Kannus are Kalajoki in the north, Sievi in the east, Toholampi in the southeast and Kokkola in the west. The city is monolingual Finnish .
The municipality of Kannus has existed since 1858, and in 1986 it received city status. The villages of Eskola, Hanhineva, Korpela, Mutkalampi, Märsylä, Välikannus, Ylikannus and Yliviirre are in the Kannus area. The Lestijoki River flows through Kannus . The river landscape with its fields, villages and old country roads is officially recognized as a place of cultural and historical value. Another attraction of the city is the wooden church, completed in 1817 .
Kannus is the Finnish representative in the European Charter - Villages of Europe , a group of rural communities from all 28 EU countries.
