Veteli [ ˈvɛtɛli ] ( Swedish : Vetil ) is a municipality in western Finland with 3166 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Middle Ostrobothnian landscape , 54 kilometers southeast of Kokkola . Neighboring communities of Veteli are Kaustinen in the north, Halsua in the east, Perho in the southeast, Vimpeli in the south, Lappajärvi in the southwest and Evijärvi and Kronoby in the west. The community is monolingual in Finnish .

The municipality of Veteli includes the villages of Aho, Alaspää, Haapala, Haapasalo, Heikkilä, Haukilahti, Isokylä, Kalliojärvi, Nykänen, Patana, Polso, Pulkkinen, Rytiniemi, Räyrinki, Sillanpää, Siponkoski, Torpari, and Pa. The landscape on the Perhonjoki River flowing through Veteli has been officially recognized as an ensemble of cultural and historical value. Another attraction of the community is the wooden church, completed in 1839 . Veteli is also known for the Kemora Circuit , which has hosted national motorsport events since 1983.

People in the community

The long-distance runner Paavo Kotila (1927-2014), the cross-country skiers Hannu Taipale (* 1940) and Kalle Lassila (* 1985) and the central politicians Esko Aho (* 1954) and Juha Sipilä (* 1961) were born in Veteli . The composer Pehr Henrik Nordgren (1944–2008) died in Veteli .
