Esko Tapani Aho [ ˈɛskɔ ˈɑhɔ ] (born May 20, 1954 in Veteli / Finland ) is a Finnish politician and, as Prime Minister (1991–1995), former Prime Minister of Finland.

Aho holds a Master of Social Science degree from Helsinki University and has been a Member of Parliament since 1983. From 1990 to 2000 he served as chairman of the Finnish Center Party , one of the three major political parties. He is known for having brought Finland to the European Union as Prime Minister .

From 1994 to 2002 he was Vice-President of the Liberal International , from 1996 to 2000 President of the Finnish Ski Association Suomen Hiihtoliitto and from 1997 to 2000 Vice-President of the Finnish Olympic Committee .

At the beginning of 2000 he applied for the office of Finnish President , but was defeated in the popular election in the second round of the then Foreign Minister Tarja Halonen . Aho then withdrew from active politics. He was initially released from all party offices for a year to hold lectures at Harvard University .

In the following years Aho worked as a private consultant . In 2004 he was appointed President of the Finnish Innovation Fund SITRA. At Fortum he has been a member of the Supervisory Board since 2006 . From 2007 he was a member of the supervisory board of the Russian Venture Company (RVC) established by the Russian government in 2006 .

On August 15, 2008, the telecommunications company Nokia announced that Esko Aho would succeed Veli Sundbäck in January 2009 as Executive Vice President , Corporate Relations and Responsibility . Since 2009 he has also been Vice President of the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries (Teknologiateollisuus ry).
