Oskari Mantere

Oskari Mantere (born September 18, 1874 in Hausjärvi , † December 9, 1942 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish politician and Prime Minister.

Studies and professional career

The family of Oskar Majamäki, born in 1889, changed their family name to "Mantere". He later completed a degree in philosophy . After completing his studies, he received his doctorate as a "Doctor philosophiae" . From 1924 until his death he was director of the school inspectorate .

Political career

He began his political career in 1919 when he was elected member of the Finnish Parliament . There he represented the interests of the liberal National Progressive Party (KEP) until 1938 . From November 1922 to January 1924 he was Minister of Social Affairs in Kyösti Kallio's first cabinet . He was later Deputy Minister of Education in Lauri Ingman's cabinet from May 1924 to March 1925 .

From December 22, 1928 to August 16, 1929 he was Prime Minister of a coalition government made up of the KEP and the National Collection Party (KOK). However, the KOK ministers were members of the cabinet on their own initiative and were not sent to the cabinet by their party.

He was later Minister of Education in Toivo Kivimäki's cabinet from December 1932 to October 1936 . In this function he was also a delegate at the 14th Ordinary Session of the League of Nations in Geneva in 1933 .
