Juho Heikki Vennola (born June 19, 1872 in Oulu , † December 3, 1938 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish economist, politician and Prime Minister.

Life

Vennola, who was born as Juho Heikki Karhu, completed a degree in economics . Later he was Professor of Economics at Helsinki University .

After independence he was Deputy Minister of Finance from 1918 to 1919. He began his real political career with the election as a member of the Reichstag . There he represented the interests of the National Progressive Party (KEP) from 1919 to 1930 . From April to August 1919 he was Minister for Trade and Industry in Kaarlo Castrén's cabinet .

On August 15, 1919, he succeeded him as Prime Minister. His first term of office lasted until March 15, 1920. From June to October 1920 he was a member of the delegation in the negotiations for the Peace of Dorpat . On October 15, 1920, the Treaty of Dorpat recognized the independence of Finland within the boundaries of the Grand Duchy of Finland by the Bolshevik Soviet Russia .

From April 9, 1921 to June 2, 1922, he was Prime Minister for the second time as successor to Rafael Erich . He later served as Foreign Minister in Kyösti Kallio's first cabinet from November 1922 to January 1924 .

Most recently he was Finance Minister from July 1930 to March 1931 and as such acting Prime Minister from February 16 to March 21, 1931, after the incumbent Pehr Evind Svinhufvud had been elected President of the Republic of Finland .
