Pertti Kullervo Paasio (born April 2, 1939 in Helsinki - † April 4, 2020 ) was a Finnish politician who, among other things, was chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Finland SDP (Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue) from 1987 to 1991 and deputy prime minister and foreign minister from 1989 to 1991 was.

Life

Pertti Kullervo Paasio, son of the politician and two-time prime minister Rafael Paasio and his wife Mary Paasio Wahlman, began studying political science at the University of Turku after attending school and graduated in 1968 with a master's degree. During his studies, he began his involvement with the Social Democratic Party of Finland SDP (Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue) in local politics and was a member of the Turku City Council from 1965 to 1990 . After completing his studies, he was Deputy Head of the Turku Tourism Office from 1968 to 1973 and during that time from March 1 to September 4, 1972, Special Assistant to Minister of Finance Mauno Koivisto . From 1973 to 1987 he was head of the Turku Region Labor Office and during this period from January 1 to June 13, 1975, he was also an advisor to Prime Minister Kalevi Sorsa .

In 1975 Paasio was elected for the first time as a member of the Reichstag (Eduskunta) for the SDP and was a member of it until 1979. During this time he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was also a member of the electoral college for the presidential election in 1978 and 1982 and a member of the Executive Committee of the SDP from 1978 to 1987. In 1982 he was re-elected to the Reichstag, to which he was a member until 1996. From 1982 to 1989 he was again a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and from October 25, 1984 to June 15, 1987 chairman of the SDP parliamentary group in the Reichstag. From 1985 to 1987 he also served as chairman of the Finnish National Committee for European Security. On June 5, 1987, he replaced Kalevi Sorsa as chairman of the SDP and held the position of party chairman, which his father Rafael Paasio held from 1963 to 1975, until he was replaced by Ulf Sundqvist on November 16, 1991. In 1988 Paasio was again a member of the electoral college for the presidential election.

On February 1, 1989 Pertti Paasio became Deputy Prime Minister (Pääministerin sijainen) and Foreign Minister (Ulkoasiainministeri) in the Holkeri cabinet and held this office until April 26, 1991. In the election on March 17, 1991 , he was the top candidate of the SDP. However, with 603,080 votes (22.12 percent), his party became only the second strongest party after the Center Party (KESK) and lost eight parliamentary seats, so that it was only represented with 48 seats in the Reichstag. In 1991 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique . After leaving the government, he was chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Reichstag from 1991 to 1996. He was also from 6 February to 6 November 1996 again chairman of the SDP group.

After Finland joined the European Union , Paasio was elected a member of the European Parliament in the European elections on October 20, 1996 and was a member of it until 1999. He was again a member of the Turku City Council from 2001 to 2008 and its chairman from 2003 to 2006.

His marriage to Kirsti Kaarina Johansson in 1967 resulted in the four children Ari, Päivi, Heli and Jouni. His daughter Heli Paasio was also a member of the Reichstag for the SDP from 1999 to 2015. Pertti Paasio died in spring 2020, shortly after his 81st birthday.
