Pekka Olavi Haavisto (born March 23, 1958 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician of the Green Bund party and has been Foreign Minister of the Republic of Finland since June 6, 2019 , initially in the Rinne cabinet and since December 10, 2019 in the Marin cabinet . Previously, he was Environment Minister and Minister for International Development from 1995 to 1999 and Minister for International Development from 2013 to 2014.

Life

After leaving school, Pekka Haavisto became involved in politics and became a member of the Green Federation. From 1993 to 1995 he was chairman of this party. In the 1987 general election he was elected as a member of the Finnish Parliament , to which he was a member until 1995. In the first cabinet of the then Social Democratic Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen , Haavisto was Environment Minister and Minister for International Development from 1995 to 1999 . In 1995 he became the first Minister of a Green Party in Western Europe and the second in the world.

From 1999 to 2005 Haavisto worked in various areas for the United Nations . He headed the UN Environment Program (UNEP) in Kosovo , Afghanistan , Iraq , Liberia , Palestine and Sudan . He coordinated UNEP investigations into the uranium ammunition used in the wars in the former Yugoslavia in Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and took part in the United Nations investigations into the Baia Mare dam breach in Baia Mare , Romania.

In 2005, Haavisto was appointed special representative of the European Union in Sudan, where he took part in the peace talks in Darfur. In 2007 Haavisto was re-elected as a member of the Finnish Parliament for the Helsinki constituency. In 2011 he was named a candidate for the Green League for the 2012 presidential election . In the election on January 22, 2012, he achieved second place with 18.8 percent of the vote and thus reached the runoff against Sauli Niinistö from the conservative rallying party . Haavisto finally received 37.4% in the runoff election held on February 5, 2012, favorite Niinistö 62.6%.

Haavisto was appointed Minister for International Development in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 2013 to succeed Heidi Hautala . He left the government in September 2014.

In 2017, the Greens reappointed Haavisto as a candidate for the 2018 presidential election .

Haavisto has been Foreign Minister since June 6, 2019, initially in the government of Antti Rinne and since December 10, 2019 in the government of Sanna Marin .

Haavisto lives with his partner Antonio Flores.
