The first round of Finland's 2012 presidential election took place on January 22, 2012 . Since no candidate could achieve an absolute majority in the first ballot , a run-off election took place on February 5, 2012 between the two best-placed candidates. These were Sauli Niinistö (37% in the first ballot) and Pekka Haavisto (18.8%). Niinistö won the runoff election by a clear margin. The elected president will hold office until 2018.

The previous President Tarja Halonen of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) was no longer allowed to run for election after two terms in office.

Candidates

Eight candidates ran for election. All parties represented in the Finnish parliament put up their own candidate, including the left-wing alliance that had recently supported Tarja Halonen's candidacy.

The numbers assigned to the candidates are important in the election itself. The candidate's number is entered in a circle in the voting booth. The number 1 is reserved for the previous official. Since Tarja Halonen was no longer allowed to compete in 2012, the numbering began with the 2.
